Sastoshi Kon the mastermind behind Perfect Blue and Tokyo Godfathers brings anime fans another mind twisting story. It begins with Tsukiko Sagi, an artist who’s past her deadline. Recently she created Maromi, a puffy pink dog, sort of like something you would see in Sanrio store. While Maromi has been a smash hit, her studio is eager for Sagi’s next creation. Tsukiko gets “saved” in an unusual way a young body carrying a golden bat and golden inline skates assaults her. Detectives Maniwa and Ikari go in search of the child criminal Lil’ Slugger, but the real question is does he even exist?

After two successive attacks from Lil’ Slugger the city is in a panic and all eyes are turned towards Yuichi. He’s the number one student in school, a star athlete and aiming to become the next class president. Although, his plans and popularity come to a screeching halt due to the appearance of Lil’ Slugger. Yuichi becomes the number one suspect. Is Yuichi Lil’ Slugger?

If you haven’t seen Paranoia Agent on adult swim, get the DVDs or UMDs. The series is groundbreaking. The plot will keep you guessing all the way through. It doesn’t try to drop huge twists, even though there are a few. Paranoia Agent is more subtle in its delivery, more psychological. Paranoia Agent also distinguishes itself from other animes because it doesn’t follow a protagonist per-se. Instead it moves between a few key characters, with a new character taking center stage each episode. The first two episodes on Paranoia Agent volume 1 set the framework and develop the mystery around Lil’ Slugger. Is he a warped child obsessed with violence? Is he doing his victims a favor? Is Lil’ Slugger even real?

What do you get when you pick up the $20 UMD disc? Sharp video of the first two episodes to take along with your PSP. The disc takes advantage of the PSP’s widescreen, with a 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen ratio. On top of the fairly good English dub you can switch into the Japanese track with English subtitles. Completing the two episode disc set are animated menus and a bunch of previews for upcoming Geneon releases.
