Samurai Champloo Volume 2

The series created by Shinichiro Watanabe follows the three wanderers as they search for the Samurai who “smells of sunflowers”. There’s Mugen a fierce samurai who mixes breakdancing into his swordplay. Mugen is the exact opposite of Jin, who has a more traditional Bushido-esque style and a quiet nature. Fuu, the lighthearted girl who always seems to stumble into trouble, holds the two together. In Samurai Champloo Volume 2 the introductions are over, we know about the journey and it’s time to delve into action.

For the first time Mugen and Jin end up with the same idea, ditching Fuu. After wandering the new town both of the swordsmasters end up working for the Yakuza, but for opposing gangs. Mugen works for the aggressive Nagatomi gang bent on taking over the town. Jin comes to the aid of Sosuke heir of the honorable Kawara gang. Meanwhile Fuu gets herself into trouble after breaking a vase. She’s captured and brought into a brothel owned by the Nagatomis. Instead of rushing to her rescue Mugen and Jin end up with their blades pointed at each other. It looks like nothing is going to be resolved between the rivaling gangs until the dice are pulled out to settle the score.

Samurai Champloo is a masterpiece in visual design. Everything has a hip hop feel to it. Edits are similar to music video cuts and there is genius use of a phenomenal R&B soundtrack. Even the impressive battle scenes are skillfully choreographed with breakdancing added in. All of this is captured on the tiny screen flawlessly in widescreen format. Also packed in on the disc are the Japanese language track, English subtitles and a couple of trailers of other Geneon shows. It isn’t much for extras, but maybe in the future we could have a couple of MP3s packed on the disc.

If there was a disc that was suited for portable viewing it would be this. The UMD contains a two part episode with plenty of swordfights. It isn’t mindless action, by the end of an hour you have a solid thoughtful conclusion instead of a cliffhanger ending. Coming in at a perfect length Samurai Champloo disc 2 should be picked up by all action fans out there.
