Hands On Pilotwings Resort

Pilotwings Resort was one of the playable Nintendo 3DS games in the show and it has more than planes. The jet pack from Pilotwings 64 is back! Don’t mistake Pilotwings Resort for a port — this isn’t one, although it feels based on the Nintendo 64 title.

Pilotwings Resort takes place on Wuhu Island, the same locale where Wii Sports Resort takes place. The E3 build had two parts. I went with the plane demo first. In this level, I took control of a plane that appeared to hover over the screen. You control the plane with the slide pad and fly through wings to earn points. The demo ended when I touched the final ring.

The jet pack demo was more interesting, thanks to a neat scaling effect. Like the plane demo, the rocketman popped out of the screen. The goal of this game was to pop balloons, which meant crashing into them.

Pressing the A button fired the engines and the slide pad controlled the angle of the jets. Diving into a balloon meant tilting the jets forward so the exhaust flames pointed towards the player. When the rocketeer soared into a balloon, he would appear to get smaller and further away. Add in the whimsical 3D effect created by the Nintendo 3DS’ hardware and Pilotwings Resort is a sight to see.

Like Star Fox 64 3D, Pilotwings Resort isn’t another tech demo. Nintendo plans to release Pilotwings Resort as a Nintendo 3DS game in the future.
