Pluto is a manga series by Naoki Urasawa, known best for his work on Monster and 20th Century Boys. In a surprising twist, Pluto is actually based on the existing work of another famous manga-ka, Osamu Tezuka, who is often credited as being the father of the medium.
Pluto is named after the primary antagonist of the Astro Boy manga’s "The Greatest Robot on Earth" arc, and is about the adventures of Gesicht, a Europol robot detective trying to solve a string of murders. You can see comparison shots of the two manga’s distinct art styles above.
Entertainment coverage site, Deadline.com are now reporting that Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment (Despicable Me) have acquired the rights to produce a live-action/CG hybrid film in based on Pluto, in collaboration with Tezuka Productions.
No date or further details regarding the film’s production have been revealed yet. The Pluto manga itself is currently published by VIZ in North America, under the name Pluto: Urasawa x Tezuka.
