This Incredible Nintendo 3DS App Lets Users Create Their Own Comics

This is the sort of software that makes the Nintendo 3DS such a versatile platform. Apparently, yes, you too can soon try your hand at being a mangaka now. Comic Studio is an upcoming Nintendo 3DS app that will let you create your own drawings using the touch screen of the 3DS.

Unlike Colors! 3D, this piece of software is specifically meant for creating manga and comics on the 3DS. Comic Studio seems pretty in-depth, with the comic shots here all having being done apparently entirely within the system itself.

Users start by setting how large their book will be, and from there on each individual page within can have its own panels set up to different sizes to evoke the kinds of scenes we all know and love from Japanese comics. Drawings have to be done free-hand, but Comic Studio has a crazy number of options such as being able to shrink or expand how large your brush is-even down to a single-pixel size if you need, or having the art look as if it has been water-brushed.

Other nice-to-have options include the ability to turn anti-aliasing on or off, and a bank of ready-to-go stock “expressions” and “sound effects” that can be added around characters to aid in emotion-evocation.

You’ll even be able to snap a photo with your 3DS and then use it within the app as reference material while sketching, which could come in real handy for more serious artists. It doesn’t seem likely you’ll run out of space to draw either, as the game can hold some 6,400 “pages” of materials from your doodling to look back on.

After all’s said and done, you can easily add a balloon for text and then add the text in yourself as well, so it looks all professional!

Once you’re happy with your work, you can save the file out as a JPG image, which can then be extracted from the SD card and shared via your PC or emailed via the Nintendo 3DS’s browser.

Comic Studio will go on sale for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan 15th January 2014 for 800 yen ($8) via the Nintendo eShop.
