Curve Studios (Thomas Was Alone, Velocity Ultra) are bringing Stealth 2 to Wii U as a timed exclusive, but the publisher hasn’t released any Nintendo 3DS games outside of Fluidity: Spin Cycle, which was a project commissioned by Nintendo themselves. That’s about to change soon, they said.
Speaking with Nintendo Everything, Curve Studios’ Rob Clark stated, “The 3DS is a tricky console. A ton of us at Curve own a 3DS and we love it, but when it comes to developing games it’s a bit trickier. Many of our games started out on PC and are designed for fast systems with tons of resources.”
“We have to go back to the drawing board if we want to make them on the 3DS, and in the past we’ve not always wanted to do that. However, we decided that it’s too good a system to keep missing out on, so even before the new 3DS was announced we had already made the decision to look at bringing out more games for it, so we should have an announcement about that pretty soon.”
The difference in hardware between the 3DS and other platforms on the market works both ways. In several cases, it means that the 3DS misses out on games being developed using cross-platform tools like Unity, but on the other hand, it also means that when developers create 3DS games, they’re usually more handcrafted to take advantage of the system and tend to work really well on the device.
Of course, were tools like Unity available on the 3DS, the platform would have the best of both worlds. On that note, at E3 this past year, Nintendo of America informed us that they were searching for ways to bring Unity to the 3DS. Perhaps this is something that will eventually pan out on the New Nintendo 3DS, given the system’s increased hardware resources over the current 3DS model.
