God Eater 2: Rage Burst Feels Like A More Focused Game

Recommended Videos

With God Eater Resurrection, the updated version of God Eater Burst, 2050’s Earth was established. We learned that Aragami had come to Earth, nearly wiped out humanity, and the Fenrir Organization had recruited soldiers and armed them with God Arcs to fight them. While God Eater 2: Rage Burst has players’ hero or heroine attempting to save the world in a similar way, it is in many ways a far more focused adventure.

God Eater 2: Rage Burst takes place three years after God Eater Resurrection and stars a whole new group of God Eaters. Instead of the second generation, which we met previous and saw were capable of rather standard fighting, it focuses on a group of warriors with new, more intensive features. The members of Blood have an additional drive and innate ability that allows them to use Blood Arts. While they may not be as experienced as characters like Lindow and Soma, their Blood Power lets them utilize special powers known as Blood Arts and protects them from Invasive Aragami’s Pulsating abilities.

The Blood Arts replace God Eater Resurrection’s Predator Styles. While the previous game’s abilities gave you a set skill with specific bonuses and effects when using a devour option, the Blood Arts focus on advancing and upgrading specific abilities through repeated use. When you check your Loadout at a Terminal, you can investigate the Blood Arts you’ve earned so far. Meeting certain objectives lets you earn new skills and improve them.

God Eater 2: Rage Burst also gives us a chance to see God Eater Resurrection’s characters evolve. People like Soma, Lindow, Kota, Alisa, Erina, and Kanon all return. Like our members of Blood, they’re part of Cradle and search the world looking for possible Satellite home locations, fighting Aragami, and conducting research. While some characters are only referenced and don’t actually appear, like Sakuya, we see how each has stepped up and grown in the organization. We watch as they too develop the same Blood Art abilities as the founding members of Blood. It allows for more definition.

Though, the best and clearest example of God Eater 2: Rage Burst narrowing in a way God Eater Resurrection didn’t is its character episodes. These sub-stories look closer at characters who can join your party, occasionally changing their abilities in a fight, adding new Blood Arts, new Personal Abilities, and sometimes even new items. They always offer more information about the person in question, sometimes giving silly information about something like a favorite food, and occasionally letting you know secrets about people’s pasts. The first few, with Ciel, Emil, Erina, and Kota, appear after clearing the Rank 3 second story mission, with more following after regular story mission and rank mission updates. Of course, even more follow once you get into the Rage Burst expansion content.

With God Eater 2: Rage Burst, you’re getting the sort of action and adventure you expect from a God Eater game. It’s filled with Aragami to hunt, life-threatening threats to address, and characters to connect with. The difference is, this time you feel like you’re focusing in more on your characters’ abilities and personalities than you did in God Eater Resurrection. I felt like I was learning more about specific people and groups, rather than Fenrir, God Eaters, and Aragami as a whole. The sequel has the luxury of going deeper than the original, since we already have some familiarity with all parts, and takes full advantage of that with elements like Blood Arts and Character Episodes.

God Eater 2: Rage Burst is available for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and PC.
