Nobunaga’s Ambition: Sphere of Influence – Ascension Rises To Occasions With Customization

Recommended Videos

Nobunaga’s Ambition: Sphere of Influence – Ascension is a very complex game. It’s a strategic simulation that takes a lot of time, patience, skill, and understanding to master. It might even take a few rounds before you start figuring out a good balance and start really having fun. Fortunately, it’s also a game that encourages you to make it your own, thanks to multiple customization options. You can create original officers, put together your own events, and adjust precise elements of any game before you begin it.

The character creator is a good way to start adding some custom officers to the game. You can make weaklings or powerhouses in Nobunaga’s Ambition: Sphere of Influence – Ascension. It’s all up to you. It all begins with finding a face. The game divides portraits into In-game 1-4, male, female, and extra 1 portraits. As an example, there are 187 portraits in the male section and 82 in the female section. (The male/female options divide comes up again in the voice selection, as there are 18 male voices and four female.) It’s also possible to assign a father or relative to this custom officer, to help immerse them in the story.

After the more superfluous elements are out of the way, you can get into the important parts of Nobunaga’s Ambition: Sphere of Influence – Ascension character creation. It’s the personality, tactics, and conditions that really matter. Here, you can decide if they value conservative, neutral, or progressive tenets, if their ideal is fame, clan, talent, profit, justice, ambition, mastery, or spirit, what their Required Loyalty is to determine their allegiance to you, and their tier. You can also determine their Tactic, to set a special ability they can use in battle to strengthen, restore, or obstruct enemies in the field. Their lifespan determines they’ll be available in the game, if you set the character as active, allowing you to try and make sure they’re present for as many important periods as you’d like. (Setting a lifespan of 70 should make them available for 10 of the 12 major events in the game.) You can then set them in a base, show how they’ll appear in each scenario, and determine their stat growth type and traits.

Nobunaga’s Ambition: Sphere of Influence – Ascension’s event editor is just as detailed, though it involves a little more care and attention to detail. This allows you to create an event for a specific scenario. You can make certain special events happen after important in-game occurrences. For example, if there’s a daimyo change, you get an item, something happens in an officer’s life, or something happens with a clan, you can cause something else to occur in-game, like a conversation or even a marriage. You determine which value increases or decreases or events spur on an activity, choose a background image, set background music, and create a conversation between two characters. These can even be shared online.

Unfortunately, the Nobunaga’s Ambition: Sphere of Influence – Ascension community is hardly booming on the PlayStation 4. There are only five custom historical events that have been shared. Two have detailed descriptions, and each sounds like it could prove interesting. SinfulHarlot’s Yoshizane’sMight, for the 1534 Birth of Nobunaga scenario, is described as offering an event where Yoshizane won’t let Yoshimoto win. Meanwhile, Ahhiko’s Marry_Custom_Female_Officers, also for the 1534 Birth of Nobunaga scenario, allows you to marry original female characters.

What I appreciated most were Nobunaga’s Ambition: Sphere of Influence – Ascension’s comprehensive difficulty settings. This isn’t the kind of game I normally play. While I’m good at playing some strategy games, like Civilization VI, this series can go over my head. But, with the edit options in the difficulty settings, it’s possible to make things easier than Easy. You can adjust the income, harvest, lumber and iron income, labor, soldier recover, incurred damage, and moral loss of your clan and others. It’s possible to adjust your obtained honor. AI level and aggression can be adjusted. You can even determine if quest and events happen, adjust lifespans, allow for battle deaths or fictional sons and daughters, offer maiden officers, and even enable in-game edit. Each scenario in Nobunaga’s Ambition: Sphere of Influence – Ascension can run within exact specifications, which is a comfort when you aren’t quite familiar with every element.

There’s a lot you can do to make your game of Nobunaga’s Ambition: Sphere of Influence – Ascension your own. There are plenty of character creation options, to pop in additional officers to compliment the many based on historical figures. There’s an events creator, to let you tweak the game to offer custom incidents. Of course, you can also alter multiple options before you head into any game, allowing exact adjustments to multiple fields. With all of these opportunities, you can rewrite history to your liking.
