The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s first add-on offered people an opportunity to excel. The Master Mode difficulty level arrived, as did a Trial of the Sword that would people go through 45 rooms to get a permanently charged Master Sword. It was an opportunity to do our best and get a reward in return for showing our strength. While The Champion’s Ballad does have story content and additional equipment stowed away in it, it is yet another attempt to test you and prove that you are worthy of the Master Cycle Zero.
The first thing someone needs to do to initiate The Champion’s Ballad is free all four of the Divine Beasts. If you haven’t completed Vah Medoh, Vah Naboris, Vah Rudania, and Vah Ruta, you won’t hear Zelda’s voice telling you to return to the Shrine of Resurrection. If you have, then you will be directed to return to The Great Plateau. Be ready to spend quite a bit of time there, as the first part of this challenge will involve being permanently equipped with the One-Hit Obliterator. This is a weapon that reduces Link’s life to 1/4th of a heart, but in return can kill all enemies in one hit. However, you can only kill two enemies before it needs to briefly recharge. The first portion of this quest involves defeating all enemies at four sites to unlock four new shrines. These need to be defeated to unlock the Daruk’s Song, Mipha’s Song, Revali’s Song, and Urbosa’s Song quests related to each champion.
What’s nice about these clusters of quests is that they not only unlock three new shrines and a boss fight, but they also give us a chance to learn more about the champions and see other NPCs. Kass appears to introduce us to each of these segments, singing the ballads of their deeds before and after them. The rest leaves us to spend more time with people we like. For example, Mipha’s Song has you return to the Zora king, Prince Sidon, Muzu, and Seggin to learn more about her and the three trials connected to her. This leads to a boss fight using the same equipment the champions used and an opportunity to glimpse the past.
But the best part of this might be the actual Divine Trial. This comes only after all four songs have been sung. People get to return to the Shrine of Resurrection again for another dungeon. This one is incredibly involved. Every rune you have acquired will come into play. Various Guardians appear, and there is even another boss that is incredibly difficult. I have yet to beat him, as he is just that difficult. It made me realize the other EX quests in The Champion’s Ballad we all leading up to this point.
What is nice is that the rewards definitely make the effort feel worth it. If you own a Hateno Village home, you will have a new picture there. Link finally has his own “Divine Beast”, the Master Cycle Zero. It can be summoned anywhere from the rune menu. All you need is some spare items to toss at it as fuel, and you can ride around the world speedily and in style. Even your blessings from different
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild requires you to go through even more major challenges. You need to be able to handle groups of enemies when near death. Additional shrines and bosses demand your attention. People are going to have to be at their best to win the rewards it has to offer. But it is all very manageable, if you take care and think things through. Once it is all said and done, it is quite satisfying too.
