PlayStation 4 Owners Can Take Advantage Of PSN Name Changes Starting April 10, 2019

A much-requested feature has come to the PlayStation 4. On the PlayStation Blog, Sony revealed that PSN name changes will be available to everyone starting on April 10, 2019. The feature was first announced in October 2018 and followed by a beta, but now it will be rolling out for everyone via PlayStation 4s and web browsers.

There are some downsides. Some games might not be compatible with PSN name changes. Sony has said that games published after April 1, 2018 should fully support it. There is also an official list of games both with no known issues and with identified issues. For example, games like Everybody’s Golf, LittleBigPlanet 3, MLB The Show 14, MLB The Show 15, MLB The Show 16, and Worms Battlegrounds all have Critical Issues with the feature.

For people who do want to change their PSN ID, they can do so through either their PlayStation 4 or a web browser. On the PlayStation 4, you have to go to Account Management under Settings. Once there, go to Account Information, then Profile, and finally Online ID to change your name. In a browser, you need to sign into your account and choose PSN Profile. Once there, hit Edit next to Online ID to change your name. It isn’t possible to perform these actions on a PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Vita. Also, Child accounts can’t change their PSN names.

Everyone’s first PSN name change is free. After that, people have to pay. If someone has an active PlayStation Plus subscription, it will be $4.99, but it will be $9.99 if they don’t. Reverting back to an old name is possible and doesn’t cost any money. Sony also will not allow anyone to take your old PSN ID names. In addition, your profile will show both your current and old PSN name for 30 days, to help your friends adjust.
