The (Online) Music Is Going To Stop When SingStar Servers Shut Down In January 2020

We now know the day the music will die. Sony has revealed the SingStar game servers will go offline on January 31, 2020. While the games will still be playable offline, people won’t be able to buy or download songs, share scores or performances, or compete online.

Only the online SingStar elements will be impaired. You won’t be able to buy songs after servers are closed, though people with the PlayStation 4 versions of the games will still be able to download songs they already own. (People with the PlayStation 2 or 3 games won’t be able to redownload digital songs they own.) You can’t share media or your high scores online or see others’ shared items. No more online challenges will be available, and you also won’t be able to earn the Channel Surfer, Concert Debut, Stars in my Eyes, or SingStar trophies.

Here are all of the functions that will still be available in SingStar after the servers are shutdown, according to the official website.

    • Play songs on physical discs
    • Play digital songs that have previously been purchased and downloaded to the hard-drive
    • PS4 users only will also be able to re-download previously downloaded and deleted songs. Note this is not possible for PS3 / PS2 users, where if a downloaded song is deleted, it cannot be re-downloaded
    • Play Party Mode
    • Track and record high scores offline
    • Take and store videos and snapshots onto your PlayStation hard drive
    • Create song playlists

SingStar is available for free for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, with people able to purchase songs for it. The series has been a Sony staple since the original SingStar appeared on the PlayStation 2 in 2004.
