On April 1, 2022, Adam “adamgryu” Robinson-Yu released the A Short Hike 99 online multiplayer mod. It is free and allows up to 99 people to play the game together. Any PC player can access it, with the Steam version available as the ashorthike99_mod beta branch. People who got it through itch.io or other storefronts will need to download it from the official site.
Here’s the official A Short Hike multiplayer mod announcement, which also includes a gif of three people playing on the volleyball court. The announcement warned that it is “rough” and won’t be added as a full, official mode.

Adamgryu’s A Short Hike multiplayer server will only be up for a brief time. The announcement offered a two week deadline. That means people can play with others online until April 15, 2022. However, the itch.io page did note people could set up their own servers in addition to or after that date.
A Short Hike is available on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
