The press release suggested that Rivals will appear on mobile devices as it makes comparisons to mobile games. The Captain Tsubasa franchise itself still has actively ongoing mobile games as of this writing, such as KLab’s Dream Team. Rivals will distinguish itself by generating unique character cards for each player. Even the same character will have different parameters, card designs, and music with the Generative NFT feature. Players will be able to sell and buy these character NFTs at the in-game marketplace.

To generate character NFTs, players will need to obtain Rival Pieces from both of the game’s PvP and PvE modes. The PvE mode will also let them collect Tsubasaut tokens as a currency to enhance and combine characters.

Captain Tsubasa will join the growing list of Japanese franchises that get a blockchain game adaptation. Recently announced games that are set to feature NFTs include the likes of The King of Fighters, Astro Boy, and Ni no Kuni. Square Enix and Konami have also sold NFT merchandise related to Final Fantasy VII and Castlevania, respectively.

The most recent Captain Tsubasa console game appeared in 2020, courtesy of Bandai Namco. Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is a sports action game that also features player-created custom characters. The console game is available on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

The new blockchain game Captain Tsubasa -Rivals- will be available on mobile devices worldwide in 2022.
