In an interview with Director Tetsuya Nomura and Producer Yoshinori Kitase, the two had multiple things to say about the remake and its place in the Final Fantasy VII Compilation. Kitase actually said that it had “been in existence for a very long time.” Nomura went on to add that, “We developed the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, the installments included Advent Children, Before Crisis, Crisis Core, and Dirge of Cerberus, so we knew we wanted to make a fifth installment.” Nomura also said that they were short of resources, as he was the only one heading the project, therefore leading it to be postponed.

Kitase later said in the interview that Final Fantasy VII nearly reaching its 25th anniversary is what caused the project to resume production. After that, and in a meeting with Producer Shinji Hashimoto, the ball started to roll. You can read the complete statement below.

Additionally, Nomura being Nomura, he had something to say about the term “remake” being attached to the latest installment of the compilation. In another section of the translated interviews, Nomura mentioned that “remake” has another meaning and that he cannot answer what that means right now. The interview goes on to detail how they came to a decision regarding the game’s logo. You can read more about Nomura’s statement regarding the Remake and about the decision behind the logo in full below.
