While multiple conventions are taking a year off as a result of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, it’s providing an opportunity for other companies to try something new. For example, Funimation is launching its own anime convention. FunimationCon 2020 will be held entirely online between July 3-4, 2020, and it will be free for everyone in certain regions to attend.
In its announcement, Funimation noted that this will be a virtual, livestreamed event for anime fans. It did not note exact people or series that will be represented at FunimationCon 2020. However, it did confirm that there will be voice actors attending for live-reads of shows or to take part in Q&As with fans. There will also be virtual industry panels, which could lead to news or reveals. Interactive events, with cosplay contests specifically mentioned, might also provide a chance for fans to still participate from a distance.
Given the overlap between games and anime, this could lead to opportunities for people to learn more about series that are going to be getting games, like Demon Slayer, or new adaptations of older shows, like the upcoming Bleach anime.
In other Funimation news, the company recently tapped into series NIS America has licensed in North America. This means people could stream Love Live! or Toradora.
