Developer Byking has released new information on Magicians Dead: Force of the Soul. It’s a new 3D multiplayer combat game slated for a PlayStation 4 release. If the name sounds familiar, that’s because Force of the Soul is a follow-up to the original Magicians Dead. That title, a motion control-based arcade game, received a limited release in North America.

The Magicians Dead: Force of the Soul trailer lays out the basic conflict at the heart of the series. The game and its setting revolve around a conflict between “magic users” and “Psychicers.” Magic users include witches and wizards and live in secret. This faction employs ancient techniques passed down through generations. Psychicers are agents of a global government agency dedicated to stopping magic user extremists. The Psychicers use psychic powers to fight on the level of the magic users.
Developer Byking also worked on the Mobile Suit Gundam VS series, Gunslinger Stratos, and the short-lived PS3-era game Rise of Incarnates. Based on the gameplay footage shown, Magicians Dead: Force of the Soul seems to carry a similar emphasis on high-mobility battles with lock-on aiming. Players will compete in 3-on-3 matches, and use flashy attacks to take each other out. A story mode or character interactions also appears to be part of the game, though the focus is on multiplayer. Though the original arcade game used a custom motion controller, Force of the Soul appears to employ more traditional gamepad-based controls.
Magicians Dead: Force of the Soul is set for a spring 2022 release in Japan on the PS4. Byking hasn’t yet announced a localization for the game.
