Not one but two new fighters are joining the Melty Blood Type Lumina roster via DLC. Veteran mage Aoko Aozaki accompanies the previously announced Dead Apostle Noel. Both fighters are coming free of charge to all players. The announcement came on December 31, 2021, courtesy of the official Melty Blood Type Lumina Twitter account.

Though the wording of the statement refers to a “decision,” both characters will debut on January 13, 2022 with the Melty Blood Type Lumina DLC. No choice needs to be made by players.
Type-Moon also took the opportunity to get into more detail about the addition of Aoko as the latest Melty Blood Type Lumina DLC fighter. Aoko Aozaki is a veteran of previous Melty Blood games. She’s also the star of Mahoutsukai no Yoru, a foundational Type-Moon work. She appears as she does in Tsukihime: a tremendously powerful, itinerant mage dressed in unassuming store-bought clothing. It’s in this form that she appeared to Tsukihime protagonist (and fellow Melty Blood fighter) Shiki Tohno. She becomes his mentor and gifts him with glasses that block the effect of his Mystic Eyes of Death Perception.
Voiced in previous games and the Carnival Phantasm anime by Kotono Mitsuishi (Gundam Seed‘s Murrue Ramius, Evangelion‘s Misato Katsuragi), Aoko is played by Haruka Tomatsu, her actress in Tsukihime Remake. Tomatsu also played Asuna in Sword Art Online and Haru Okumura in Persona 5.
Type-Moon also uploaded a battle preview trailer showing Aoko’s fighting style in Type Lumina. In previous games, Aoko was a powerful “zone control” character, able to restrict her opponent’s movement with her magic and projectiles while she moved in for a close-range beatdown.
The Melty Blood Type Lumina DLC featuring Aoko and Dead Apostle Noel will arrive on January 13, 2022. The game itself is immediately available on PC, Switch, Xbox One, and PS4. An anime adaptation of Aoko’s game Mahoutsukai no Yoru is in production. A PS4 and Switch port of the game itself will debut in Japan in 2022.
