Ongoing Chip Shortage Results in PS5 Production Outlook Reduction

According to a report from Bloomberg, Sony has reduced the production outlook of the PS5 due to the ongoing chip shortage. Sony cut its expectations for the current fiscal year by 1 million units. The original production forecast aimed for 16 million units. It has now been lowered to 15 million units. This is largely due to the ongoing chip shortage, along with a shortage of other parts. In May 2021, Sony announced that it would potentially not be able to keep up with demand leading into 2022. [Thanks, Bloomberg!]

Additionally, the article revealed that Japanese consumers are making the gradual shift to purchasing the PC releases of Sony titles. However, the source of this information was not named or revealed. In October 2021, God of War was revealed to be one of several PlayStation exclusive titles that would be released for PC. Other titles include the Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection.

As of August 2021, the Sony sold 10.1 million PS5 units worldwide. These included sales for the digital and standard models. Additionally, Sony announced a “wishlist” feature for the PlayStation 5. Consumers will now be able add games to their wishlist to be notified when a game added to their wishlist goes on sale.

The ongoing chip shortage means the PS5 may still prove difficult to find going into 2022.
