In an interview with Famitsu, Resident Evil Village Director Morimasa Sato opened up about the future of the series. He spoke briefly about certain expectations people have of the horror genre, before sharing his thoughts. Additionally, Sato shared who his favorite character in Resident Evil Village is, and addressed concerns that the game could be too scary. [Thanks, Famitsu!]
Regarding the future of the Resident Evil series, Director Sato said this:
I don’t have a specific idea, but I’m still thinking about the fundamental question, “What is horror?” There are certain “clichés” with classic horror creatures, scenarios, and execution, but “fear” is essentially a primitive reaction to an unpredictable or unknowable event. So I feel like there is only a new sense of horror, or a new Resident Evil, only after breaking those “clichés”..
However, Sato also stated:
Resident Evil has always evolved in search of the best horror experience, sometimes incorporating amazing changes to the series. I don’t know how the Resident Evil series will evolve in the future.
Sato also revealed that Karl Heisenberg was his favorite character in Resident Evil Village. This was largely due to his appearance, and his more unconventional “power” as a Resident Evil character. In October 2021, Capcom reported that Resident Evil Village had sold over 5 million units worldwide. And at the rate that it continues to sell, it could eventually become the best selling title in the series.
