Sony Will Stop Producing Blu-ray Discs in February 2025

Sony has announced that it will cease its production of all models of its Blu-ray disc media, recordable MiniDiscs, recordable MD Data, and Mini DV Cassettes in February 2025. The company added that there will be no new successors to the physical record media.

Sony did not specify a detailed reason for the cessation, but it is not the first company to stop its production of Blu-ray discs. When Panasonic made the cut earlier in February 2023, it noted a difficulty in maintaining continuous profit as streaming videos via the internet has become the more popular option.

However, as Sony is also the company behind the PlayStation family of consoles, there will be questions raised about the future of physical video game releases on the platform series, since it has utilized the Blu-ray discs since the PlayStation 3 era.

The original PlayStation 5 released in November 2020 had two versions with and without a disc drive. But when Sony released the PS5 Pro in November 2024, it only prepared a disc drive-less version of the console, and people who want a disc drive must instead purchase it separately.

There will be no more new Blu-ray disc media produced and released by Sony after February 2025.
