Sword Art Online Progressive is the title of a “reboot” series of light novels by SAO creator Reki Kawahara. Rather than hopping from game to game following the exploits of Kirito and his friends, SAO Progressive focuses on the earlier days of the death game. It covers events and incidents in the lives of Kirito and Asuna as they struggle to clear the lower floors of Aincrad.
Aria of a Starless Night distinguishes itself further by using Asuna as the viewpoint character. Viewers learn about one of Asuna’s long-lost friends, a young woman named Mito. She helped get Asuna into Sword Art Online in the first place. The film debuted in Japan on October 30, 2021, topping box office charts for the weekend. Aria of a Starless Night will release internationally as well. The film opens in North America on December 3, 2021, and in other countries in 2021 and 2022.
Check out the film’s final Japanese trailer, which is focused on the Game Master. A character controlled by the creator of Sword Art Online, The Game Master traps the game’s population inside the virtual environment of Aincrad, threatening them with death in the real world if they die in the game.
The Sword Art Online Progressive – Scherzo of a Dark Dusk – sequel is due to premiere in Japan in 2022.
