It took a while, but the Sonic the Hedgehog movie’s Japanese debut has finally been set. People will be able to catch up with the Sonic movie in Japan on June 26, 2020. That’s almost exactly three months after its original March 27, 2020 release, which was delayed as a result of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]
To go along with the new release date, there’s also a new trailer. It offers a look at some “movie posters” featuring the lead characters. There’s one for Sonic, Dr. Robotnik, and original characters Tom Wachowski and Maddie Wachowski.
For those unaware, the Sonic movie’s Japanese debut showed up in the news for a reason other than the delay. It also replaced classic Sonic the Hedgehog voice actor Junichi Kanemaru with Taishi Nakagawa.
It is also important to note that the Japanese release could lead to the Sonic movie hitting new milestones. It passed $100 million in sales at the global box office in February 2020, though that didn’t take into account countries like Japan and China, as the movie was delayed there. In March 2020, it went on record as having earned $145.8 million domestically to become the United State’s best selling video game movie ever.
People can pick up digital and physical copies of Sonic the Hedgehog immediately in North America. Paramount has confirmed it is working on a sequel.
