On January 28, 2025 President Donald Trump announced that the United States of America is looking to place tariffs on Chinese assembled electronics and chips produced in Taiwan. Tariffs on these items could be raised as high as 100%, which would impact mobile devices and for products created by AMD and NVIDIA. [Thanks, PCMag!]
This could potentially drive prices for NVIDIA graphics cards, AMD processors, and Apple devices through the roof. As the main manufacturer in question that Trump seems to be targeting with this is TSMC – a Taiwanese semi-conductor manufacturer. While TSMC does have a factory in Arizona, a majority of it’s chip production has remained in Taiwan, with TSMC sending it’s chips to other Asian countries where they are then assembled to create products that will then be shipped to the United States.
In January 2021, a chip shortage resulted in continued scarcity of both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. The CEO of AMD shared this information, and during a presentation pointed out that both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X were reliant on a custom chip created by the company. Outside of this, AMD processors are also largely used in desktop PCs to support current generation games.
