<< How to read and understand sales

Last week, Nintendo released Style Savvy 3 in Japan, and the game sold 55,179 copies in Japan. That doesn’t sound like a whole lot, but it’s actually in line with how Style Savvy games typically sell. They move a few ten thousand units at launch, and when you come back a year or so later, they’re in the hundreds of thousands.

For the sake of comparison, here’s a look at the launch sales of the two prior Style Savvy games:

  • (2008) Style Savvy – 75,770
  • (2011) Style Savvy: Trendsetters – 65,908

The original Style Savvy may have started out with just 76,000 in sales, but went on to sell over 900,000 copies during the course of its life. Meanwhile, Style Savvy: Trendsetters launched at 66,000 but went on to sell well over 370,000 copies over the 12 months following its release.

Of course, it bears mentioning that Style Savvy 3 has seen the lowest opening in the series yet, and this is likely because the 3DS already has a Style Savvy game in Trendsetters. These are games aimed at a more casual audience—one that likely isn’t keen on buying sequels so soon after they’ve had their fill—so perhaps in the future, we’ll see the series adopt a “once per-platform” approach similar to Mario Kart or Super Smash Bros. After all, once the platform supports it, it would make more sense to periodically update the game instead of releasing a new version each time.

That, however, is a discussion for another day. In the meantime, it’s going to be interesting to see where Style Savvy 3 is at at a year from now.

[Note: Next Wednesday, April 29th, is the start of Japan’s Golden Week holiday, and is a public holiday in the country. As a result, Media Create will release sales data a day later on Thursday, April 30th, instead.]
