What do you think of Activision’s Transformers?

The Xbox 360 screenshot above is the first picture from Travellers’ Tales game based on the upcoming Transformers movie. Bumblebee sure looks… different. The Transformers series has had a particularly negative translation to the gaming world. The NES game was an atrocity that had Ultra Magnus shoot a bunch of flying Decepticons. Transformers Tatakai for the PS2 wasn’t much better. On the plus side it had the old school Transformers in 3D, on the negative side was the gameplay where you run from one invisible wall to the next punching the same Decepticons. Atari’s Transformers game was one of the better games to use the license, but it was far from original. Can Travellers’ Tales turn around the Transformers franchise? Or are we going to see another game like Lego: Star Wars?

I actually think that Traveler’s Tales handled the Star Wars license rather well. I think they added a lot of fun for younger gamers that often get ignored by developers yet kept the game funny enough to garner older gamers. I think that Traveler’s Tales can pull off solid gaming mechanics but I hope that this game has a bit of a darker tone so that the fans of the original series can enjoy it in today’s context.

The only good Transformer game was BeastWars the 2nd for GBC.

I think it looks great so far. Then again, if it’s just a cinematic and not gameplay that would be disappointing. I’m looking forward to it!

Traveler’s Tales has a long and varied history of building licensed games. Their products range from fun and unique (Lego Star Wars), to above average (Narnia), to barely average (Bionicle Heroes). Let’s hope the new Transformers game has both style and substance, like LSW, and not just style, like Bionicle Heroes. Like vysethebold, I think Traveler’s Tales can make a decent game out of it. That’s my opinion, and you read it HERE, FIRST!

They’ve also made Sonic 3D Blast, so don’t get your hopes up.

    Hopes… sufficiently dashed

I still have a bad taste in my mouth after playing Sonic 3D Blast.

Playing the Saturn version only because it had significantly improved special stages over the Genesis release is rather ironic. Now, if only the main gameplay (the thing that should have caught your interest) itself had been improved to a similar quality, we may have had a hit.
