May virtual console update: Super Mario Brothers: Lost Levels and Streets of Rage 2

By Spencer . April 28, 2007 . 10:24am

Nintendo updated their Virtual Console schedule and here is what is coming to Japan in May:

Coming out on May 1st:

Exerion (Famicom – 500 Points)

Super Mario Brothers 2 (aka Super Mario Brothers: The Lost Levels) (Famicom – 500 Points)

Neutopia (PC-Engine- 600 Points)

Coming out later in May:

Famicom / Nintendo (500 Points)

Tsuppari Oozumou

Nintendo 64 (1,000 Points)

F-Zero X

Mega Drive / Genesis (600 Points for most)

Bare Knuckle 2: Shitou no Chinkon Uta (aka Streets of Rage 2)

Chameleon Kid (aka Kid Chameleon in the US)

Shining in the Darkness (*700 Points)

Hybrid Front (*700 Points)

PC-Engine / TurbroGrafx-16 (600 Points)

Saigo no Nindou (Ninja Spirit)

Out Live

Sengoku Mahjong

PC Genjin 3 (aka Bonk 3: Bonk’s Big Adventure)

Battle Lode Runner

Air Zonk (delayed from last month’s release schedule)

The Japanese list gives a glimpse of what we might see in North America next month. Two weeks back Sega announced Streets of Rage 2, Kid Chameleon, Shining in the Darkness and Toe Jam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron for North America. Since Japan is seeing three of the announced games next month, it’s likely that North American Wii owners will have a chance to play Streets of Rage II and Shining in the Darkness in May too. There is only one Nintendo 64 game on the list and this month it’s F-Zero X. Nintendo has typically released the sole Nintendo 64 game to all regions, which means there is a fair chance F-Zero X will be coming to North America and Europe in May.

I’m going to Japan in a few weeks and buying a Wii there. Are they easy to find in Japan? Super Mario Bros. 2 sounds exciting — I wonder if they’ll bring that to the US since it was never released here, as far as I know. (We had that vegetable throwing version.)

The thing I look forward to the most is all of those awesome NEO GEO fighting games, like Samurai Shodown, KOF, etc.

Actually, although Super Mario Bros. 2 (as in The Lost Levels) was never released on the NES at the time in America, SMB 2 was bundled together with 1 and 3 in an enhanced port for the SNES called Super Mario All-Stars, with revamped 16-bit graphics. There was also a later alternative version, released in December 1994 that brought Super Mario World to the collection plate, which could be had along with a purchase of a SNES. This compilation also included the Westernized version of Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic with Mario characters that was released as Super Mario Bros. 2 here.

If Nintendo ever gets around to releasing imports on the Virtual Console, which even Reggie has hinted toward in the past, then there’s a possibility they may release the game separately here in order to score some extra profit on the side. Otherwise, I’d expect playing Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels through the VC launch of Super Mario All-Stars.

I hope Nintendo do decide to release the lost levels over here. I am pretty sure the whole game was in english so they shouldn’t have to do to much work to get it ready.

Does anyone know are they going to release super mario bros 3 on the virtual console and even maybe the Super mario all stars?

i’m looking forward to shining in the darkness (genesis) and neutopia (tg-16.) i’m sure it won’t happen, but i’d love to see an english version of mahjjong released as well.

what would really knock my socks off is if they would release Y’s Book 1+2 for TG-16, the CD version. there’s really no reason why they shouldn’t release all of the CD games for TG-16 on the VC, such as Addams Family. The only thing that the Cd’s were really used for was recorded music, and occasioanlly some anime styled cut-scenes. As has been pointed out before, all they’d have to do is convert the music to a compressed format and then tweak the code to use it. then the downloads would be tiny.

my other wish would be to see the mega drive version of New Zealand Story released.

I bet you anything that Super Mario Bros 3 will come out next year, as 2008 will be the 20th anniversary of that game.
