DS Vision virtual store is virtually empty

dsv.jpgIf I pre-ordered the DS Vision Starter Kit I would have been disappointed. Instead of exploding with libraries of manga and TV shows to download, there are only a total of 31 items ready for launch, 10% of the proposed 300. To be fair today is the launch day and we don’t know if AM3 plans to update the store every day, once a week or once a month. However, if AM3 is aiming to make a legal version of existing gray market DS flashcards, AM3 needs a lot more content.

At least the pricing is reasonable. An episode of Speed Racer, Gatchaman or other Tatsunoko animation costs 210 yen ($2). Right now Tatsunoko is the only company with movies on the DS Vision service. Digital manga costs 315 yen ($3) for each chapter and there are a number of free trial chapters on the service. Books range most in price, going from free* (trials, like manga) to 630 yen ($6) for a 1,000+ page novel.

AM3 has a lot to do if they want to reach 20,000,000 a year by 2010.

I was thinking of ordering this gadget but thought it wasn’t such a good idea after trying out the demo, kind of weird to read a manga panel by panel.. It’s still nicer to actually flip thru a paperback novel (they have Karei-naru Ichizoku, I only watched the drama). The only good thing is books take up a lot of room compared to digital material.

So for the manga, it’s $3 for a tankoubon volume, not a chapter right? Because buying an actual tankoubon is only around $5.50. I really wonder how this service would do, 512Mb is awfully small for storing anime..

  • To be fair, 512mb seems awfully small to put in as the main storage for a “next-generation” console, too, but…

Storing regular game saves, 512mb is plenty (PS2’s 8mb), but for videos, not nearly enough, unless they’re extremely compressed and low quality, which seems to the case for these d/ls?

360’s phasing out the 20gb and coming w/ a std 60gb now.. and my PS3 is down to 10gb now from 60gb, Jpn and Eng. version of MGS4 each took up 5gb install right there. My Wii is almost out too w/ Little King, Lost Wind, and a couple of VCs.

Still, when you compare it to what Sony has done with the PSP, which basically has this sort of thing built in, anything is better, really.

$3 a Manga chapter? Sure its not volume?
