Square Enix Says Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Reverie Is Coming Soon

By Spencer . December 2, 2008 . 6:43pm

image Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride is already out in Japan and we haven’t heard anything about the next Dragon Quest DS remake. Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Reverie was notably absent from Tokyo Game Show, but attendees were too busy drooling over Dragon Quest IX to notice.

Square Enix Europe acknowledges the final installment in the Zenithia trilogy in their Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride announcement by teasing us with “look out for the next adventure in the trilogy – DRAGON QUEST: Realms of Reverie™ – coming to Nintendo DS soon.” When is soon? Sometime after spring 2009 when Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride comes out in Europe. North America is scheduled to get Dragon Quest V on the DS a few months earlier on February 17.

Japan got one Dragon Quest DS remake a year so chances are we’re going to see Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Reverie sometime in 2009. Perhaps, Square Enix will give it a speedy localization and release it internationally in 2009 too as a prelude to Dragon Quest IX. While we’re waiting for more details check out these English screenshots of Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride.

I was hoping it wouldn’t be so soon, tbh. IMO DQ6 on the SNES looked better than DQ7′s engine, so seeing DQ6 done in DQ7′s engine (if it’s finished this quickly) will be a bit of a letdown, though I guess at least we’ll be able to play it legally.

Hmm… I get the feeling that even if DQVI comes out after DQIX in Japan, we’ll see DQVI before DQIX in English. I just hope my feeling is wrong because I want them to put as much effort into this as they do to all the first DQ remakes.

@FStubbs, it’ll undoubtedly be on the same engine. But (imo), DQV DS looks better than DQVI SNES did so I think it’s possible for this remake to look better if they put in the effort.

    Loved DQ4, eagerly anticipating DQ5 & DQ6.

I wouldn’t mind if they ported DQ7 down the line either…

I hope too that they don’t “remake” with the Dragon Quest 7 engine, because the 6th game is almost as beautiful as Chrono Trigger/Final Fantasy VI..

Semi 3d just doesn’t work well for me as real 2d backgrounds.
