A Glance At Combat In Shining Force: Feather

By Spencer . December 9, 2008 . 8:15am

Shining Force is returning to its strategy RPG roots, but plenty has changed since Shining Force was part of the SRPG genre. Instead of sticking to a standard isometric grid like many strategy RPGs on the DS, Shining Force: Feather has a free running system. A meter on top lets you know how far you can move. When it empties out you can’t walk any further. Once you’re in position an orange ring appears and you can target any units caught in the ring.

I thought of Makai Kingdom when I first saw this trailer. Well, Makai Kingdom with a Xenogears-ish combo system, team attacks, and field skills (read: ranged spells).

    As a guy who grew up playing Shining Force 1 and 2, I have to say WOW.

    Things sure have change with the Shining Force Series, I don’t even recognize it anymore. Is it just me or has Shining Force become more and more anime-fied. Good thing I like anime.

  • Mirko

    Considering the whole Shining series, Shining Force 1 and 2 are the exotic beasts. :) This entry is a SRPG again, so all is well.

    @byrc

    I think the Shining games have always been heavily anime influenced… the real difference in style has more to do with anime trends of the day, rather than degree of influence imo.

    As far as Feather, I’m pretty excited and it’s nice to (finally) have a SRPG installment. I don’t even mind the grids being dropped or the Tales-ish realtime battles. No doubt Neverland’s secret Wii game is another dungeon crawling ARPG, so we’ll be getting the best of both worlds next year.

    Oh wow, I’m loving the battle system so far. How does the combo system work? When you get into a battle screen you mash buttons or what’s goin’ on?

    This and Tales of Hearts I am really anticipating. Hopefully they both get translated, as well as the SMT DS game. :(
    Let’s go, translation teams!

    I can’t believe how amazing this looks! Keep the good news coming!

    I’m also excited about tales of hearts ;)

    Looks really good! I haven’t played Shining Force 1 or 2, (I played the action-rpg ones, I forgot their names. I didn’t finish both) but I do love playing SRPGs. I don’t have a DS but I’m planning to get one. I just sold my psp to buy one.

    even through a lot has changed from the original two SRPG shinning force games, I’m really excited about this game.

    The only problem I have is with the male lead, why does he have to look so angry….come on let’s have some happy protagonists please!
