Klonoa: Door To North America

By Spencer . January 9, 2009 . 1:01pm

image Namco Bandai confirmed the Wii-make of Klonoa: Door to Phantomile, simply called Klonoa over here, is on their release 2009 release schedule. The most notable change from the PsOne version is the visuals which look gorgeous in comparison. Other new features on the Wii include reverse stages and a boss rush mode.

In the announcement Todd Thorson, Director of Marketing and Public Relations at Namco Bandai Games America, calls this a “re-boot” of the Klonoa franchise. So, more Klonoa games are coming in the future? I should ask Namco Bandai this in our Klonoa interview!

Are there any questions you want to ask them about the Klonoa series or the Wii-make? Post them in the comments and I’ll try to squeeze them in. Don’t worry about the character design survey, I already have that on my list.

Nice to get a confirmation, hopefully it lands sooner rather than later.

  • Hero of legend

Nintendo Power did a huge preview of the game when they announced it last month.

They said that the redesign was dropped since the current design was far preferred.

But yeah, ask about the idea of the redesign in full.

    My questions are:

    1. You guys mentioned plans for a Klonoa 2 Wiimake and a sequel after that if sales were good enough, or at least it had a strong enough response. Does the game’s poor sales in Japan ruin these plans?

    2. If Klonoa 2 is brought to the Wii, would it get the Klonoa 1 treatment and be a remake from scratch, or more of a port?

    3. Are there plans on making a sort of Klonoa Mega Collection containing the GBA games as well as the Volleyball game and maybe even the Wonderswan game all on one disc for the Wii?

    4. When exactly can we expect Klonoa to be released here? Any specific month?

    5. Why call the game “Klonoa” here instead of its full title “Klonoa: Door to Phantomile”?

    5. A semi-off topic question, but will the game be under the Namco Bandai Games label, or the newly announced Surge label? Or is the new label for NA developed software only?

    6. Was there any plans for the original PS1 version of Klonoa planned to be an unlockable bonus in the remake? If it’s indeed not in the remake period, maybe include that in a possible compilation mentioned above.

    7. Has the team ever considered making a free-roaming Klonoa platformer ala Sonic Adventure? Maybe as a change of pace, and not calling it Klonoa 3?

    8. Without spoling the game, what were some ideas that were considered, but didn’t make the cut, in both the original and the remake?

    9. Will Klonoa remain on Nintendo’s platforms from now on exclusively? At the same time, will we ever see a new 2D Klonoa for DS?

I think that about covers it! XD

You may reword these to the way you see fit, but try not to leave out any important bits. :P

If you were only able to put in say… three of the above, use these:

1, 3, and 5 (5 have been bugging me a bit, of course this will be answered on its own once we see We Ski & Snowboard’s box sooo yeah XD)

But try to include them all if you can. Do you have a limit on the amount of questions to be included?

    Thanks Spencer! :)

  • Kuronoa

I dunno what they will say but DO ask what other Klonoa games are in the works. I really want a Klonoa 3 or a DS/PSP Klonoa.

    Other questions
Are they keeping the voices (I heard it’s Japanese right?) or are they attempting the original ‘gibberish’ language of the series?

Is any of the stages changed, to make the reverse stages flow better?

  • Douglas

If the Wii-make proves successful, could we see a DS-remake of the GBA RPG that never make it overseas?

  • Spencer

@Hero of Legend – There’s no specific number of questions, but there is always a reasonable limit and we’re pulling to get someone special to answer them so… (fingers crossed)…

I appreciate your long list of questions, but please understand to be fair to everyone I’m going to try and select questions from multiple readers.

  • Hero of legend

@Spencer – I understand. How many from my list are you thinking of including?

  • Spencer

@Hero of Legend – I can’t give you a number right now since I want to hear what other people ask. Obviously, if more people ask the same questions I’ll put those in. The Surge label question is something I don’t think you have to worry about since it’s designed for games to appeal specifically for the West.

  • Hero of legend

    @Spencer – Alright, understood.

Hope you’re right about the label part. :P

  • jeffx

I want to know about the option to keep Japanese voices in this game (and other Namco games in general). Also is the game 16:9?

Otherwise, I’m very, VERY glad to read the redesign was dropped. Looks like all of our complaining didn’t fall on deaf ears… good show Namco.

Now coerce Arika into doing Nightmare of Druaga 2! I guarantee at least 3 copies sold.

All I really want to know is if there are any more Klonoa games (specifically for Wii and DS) possible in the near future.I got hooked on the first GBA titles and Klonoa 2 for PS2, some I’m always hoping for a Klonoa 3 somewhere down the road (I had given up hope until this remake surfaced).

  • ZefiroTorna

    A few questions to ask:

-How much of the original team (rather… Klonoa Works?) participated in the development of this remake?

-What is being done to promote this game’s NA release?

  • Connor

    - Why was the subtitle ‘Door to Phantomile’ dropped for the North American release?

  • daizyujin

I have played the first world of the game and it is a very fun experience. If anybody has any questions I may be able to help. It plays exactly as I remember it, but thankfully you get the option to listen to the voices in Japanese instead of jibberish if you like. I only tried it with the remote and nunchuku. When my bud brings it over this weekend, I will see if it has CC support.

    @jeffix

It seemed to run in 16:9 to me. At least it didn’t look stretched. Seriously though this game is really good looking overall.

  • wii_HD

    A couple of simple questions.

How much is Klonoa going to retail.

Which quarter will it be released.

  • Advent

Hero of legend said it all! Specifically I want to know…

-Why call the game “Klonoa” here instead of its full title “Klonoa: Door to Phantomile”?

-Are there plans on making a sort of Klonoa Mega Collection containing the GBA games as well as the Volleyball game and maybe even the Wonderswan game all on one disc for the Wii?

    (And finally my own question)

-Will the new Klonoa design be in Phantomile as an alternate costume of some sort?

Good luck with the interview Spencer!

  • Hero of legend

@Advent – Glad you like my questions! :)

@Spencer – You may as well ignore the Surge question, and just include # 1, 3, 5. But I’ll merge 3 and 6 together like this, and put the three mentioned questions here again so that you don’t get a headache from scrolling too much:

    - You guys mentioned plans for a Klonoa 2 Wiimake and a sequel after that if sales were good enough, or at least it had a strong enough response. Does the game’s poor sales in Japan ruin these plans?

    - Are there plans on making a sort of Klonoa Mega Collection containing the original PS1 version of Klonoa 1, the GBA games (including never-localized Klonoa Heroes), as well as the Volleyball game and maybe even the Wonderswan game all on one disc for the Wii?

    - Why call the game “Klonoa” here instead of its full title “Klonoa: Door to Phantomile”?

Hope that’s easier for you! :)

  • wii_HD

Whats with the Klonoa collection call – poor Asia sales and unknown overseas sales – the Bandai Namco group rep wont be commiting to anthing other than the standard lets see spiel.

What I want to know is why both (2005)(2007) Mario Kart Arcade titles have not been released for the home out seeing as they are running on GameCube based hardware (TriForce)

  • http://www.gamercafe.cl Hayama

    I got a question:

The game story will be exactly the same as the original PSX title? because it got some very sad moments for a “family game”… or the exact question is: Are they going to retain the same ending of the original title? because is awesome, one of my favorite videogame endings ever… and i got some suspicios about some type of “censoring” now that they can remake the game on the Wii.

  • Hero of legend

@Wii-HD – I’ve been wondering about the MK Arcade games as well.

But if I had one burning non-Klonoa question for Namco, it would not doubt be about the status of Sword of Legendia. :/

Hopefully Spencer can get an interview with the Tales team and get the good word about that.

  • tealovertoma

I’d like to know about if they keep the Japanese voices as well. I’d hate to see an English dubbed version of this =/

  • lostinblue

    Questions:

When did the development for Klonoa remake start?/When was the project greenlighted?

Was the engine done from the scratch?

    How big was the Team?

What are they most proud in the final game? (tech achievement, feature, improvement, etc)

What do you think of the architecture/platform?

Any chances of a collectors edition with a artbook?

Is Namco thinking about giving the same treatment for other Namco franchises rather than just doing simple ports?

What other Namco franchises would they like to give the Klonoa remake treatment?

And… if these are US Namco reps rather than the team for the game… Beg them for Fragile to make it across, please. (and tell them that Wii fans want the next Team Symphonia game since most were introduced to Tales fandom through Tales of Symphonia it’s only natural)

  • Spencer

@Everyone – Thanks for all the questions! Fingers crossed we’re going to get someone “special” from the Klonoa series to answer them so I’m going to be picking big picture questions about development, the remake, and the future of Klonoa.

  • lostinblue

^ Oh, I see, I was leaning towards the idea we would get a “regular” Namco US representative for the game localization process or something.

Well, if we get a hot shot from the team I definitely want him to answer some tech mumbo jumbo question then :D (tech-whore here)

As for my question regarding a artbook, I’m sure Namco would decline if asked (for one they don’t expect it to sell through the roof), but as collector edition whore that’s one of my standard questions, goes to show interest I guess.

  • lostinblue

oh, and if we get someone “special” I you can, ask him for some sketch artwork and stuff, if possible :P (I love those)

  • SteveJ

I’m really looking forward to this game.
