Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver Details Emerge

http://www.siliconera.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/gsremake_trainers01.jpg And here it is, at long last! The Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver blowout we’ve all been waiting for thanks to CoroCoro magazine.

First up, the male trainer looks the same (like Yoshi) as he did in Pokémon G/S/C. The female trainer, however, has undergone a redesign, and looks a tad weird. Depending on which trainer you pick, the other will serve in a supporting role similar to Lucas and Dawn from Diamond/Pearl/Platinum.

The Pokégear has been redesigned as well, as have Sprout Tower and the Slowpoke Well (I don’t remember the latter…where was it, again?). Sprout Tower is used as an example to show off the return of the new area cutscenes from Fire Red and Leaf Green.

http://www.siliconera.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/pichuevent.jpg There also seems to be some sort of crossover/promotion with the new Pokémon movie releasing this July: Arceus – Toward the Overcome’s Time Space! A Pikachu-coloured Pichu and a notch-eared Pichu, both from the movie, will be available to players that pre-order the game. Pre-orders start July 20th, the same date the new movie releases. These two Pichus will trigger an ingame event at Ilex Forest, which is where you found Celebi in Pokémon Crystal.

http://www.siliconera.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/arceus_event.jpg You also get access to a special Arceus, which allows you to access a neat little pokémon history lesson about Arceus and Sinnoh in Pokémon Platinum by transferring it over to the game. You can read more about this here if you’re interested (spoilers abound).

http://www.siliconera.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/gsremake_touchscreen.jpg Your starter pokémon can also follow you now, although this may or may not be restricted just to the starters. The most significant change shown so far, however, seems to be the UI. Judging by the scan on the right, most of your menu management is going to be touchscreen-enabled, which I’m a pretty big fan of after Chinatown Wars. New Wi-Fi features are mentioned, but no details on these are offered.

Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver will release in Japan this fall. A Western release is most definitely planned.

Food for thought:

1. Are Japanese players going to be presented with yet another way to find Celebi?

2. Will Lugia be able to influence the ingame weather?

3. Will the Pikachu-coloured Pichu be a shiny?

4. A neat bonus for DS Lite owners would be being able to plug in their Fire Red/Leaf Green cart and fight a high-level version of their Kanto trainer in the cave you fought Red.

5. Is that a camera on the Pokégear? Hmmm…DSi-enhanced hint?

The pikachu colored pichu is just a shiny pichu. Fans just started calling it “pikachu-colored” because its shiny color is similar to pikachus color.

Wow, im already hyped for Heart Gold and Soul Silver!. :D

    Thank you!

I still don’t understand why Pokemon is so popular outside Japan but other RPGs aren’t.

The Slowpoke Well is in Azalea town, where they worship Slowpoke. Team Rocket kidnaps all the slowpoke in town and sells their disembodied tails to premium buyers as a delicacy. Of course, I only remember that because of my recent play through in crystal, so I don’t blame you for forgetting. As for the remake, I think it has to be DSi enhanced or else half of Japan will feel ripped off, especially since DQIX will not have DSi features (but will be awesome nonetheless.)

Slowpoke Well was right before the Bug gym town, it had rockets in it.

I’m disappointed that they didn’t just modernize the Crystal design for the girl (although I see hints of the design in her) and went for that design. Unlike most of the male/female matches since the original Crystal, those two seem radically different from each other enough that it really bugs me to no end for some reason.

you link to serebii and still say this is new info while it has been on serebii for a few days

    • Didn’t see this or I would’ve replied to it sooner.

Truth is, this post has been in drafts for about a week now. We didn’t post it earlier because there was a lot of conflicting information coming from other sites. Since we didn’t have the actual magazine ourselves, we decided not to rely on second-hand information until we were positive it was all verified.

      For instance:

      – Kanto has NOT been confirmed like some sites are reporting.

      – We know nothing about other, non-starter pokémon following you.

Not to sound like a press release but Siliconera prides itself on breaking news accurately, covering topics that other sites don’t and giving everyone (devs, publishers…everyone) a fair shot. It would boggle your mind if you knew how many articles and posts we discard from our drafts, all in the name of fair, unbiased enthusiasm/reporting. ;)

Why did they make a new girl when there already was one?

  • Joanna

Personally I liked the old design for the girl from Crystal. I’m a little annoyed to hear Japan will get more unlockable stuff. sniff. I wish they would cut this BS about going to a specific locations and just give it to us in the game, Mystery Gift, or through DSiWare (charge 2-5 dollars for example) , I would be much more willing to buy the items/pokemon through DSiWare then drive to the US. >____>

  • ninjabreadgirl

will you have the cellphones, like in gold/silver, so that other trainers can call you to battle?

  • omg ! :O

i’m not sure, but that looks more like a trainer card than a camera to me.
