Wizardry: Dungeon of the Imprisoned Souls Bewitching PlayStation 3

image Acquire also picked up the rights to Wizardry. Yeah, the classic PC RPG series. While mostly forgotten in the West, Wizardry has a cult following in Japan.

Acquire understands this and are commissioning Wizardry: Torawareshi Damashii no Meikyou (Wizardry: Dungeon of Imprisoned Souls) for the PlayStation 3. The official site is bereft of details, but Yahoo Japan seems to know something about the game.

According to their PlayStation 3 release calendar Wizardry: Dungeon of the Imprisoned Souls is slated to come out this fall in Japan as a downloadable game available on the PlayStation Store.

No announcements have been made about a Western release, but Atlus USA worked on a Wizardry game, deal with Acquire, and are aggressively pursuing downloadable games.

Isn’t this that game where you can teleport into a wall?

Ahh, I would love an American release. It will never happen, but I would still love it. Wizardry games are probably the most satisfying games.

Alright here’s the homepage for the also-recently announced DS version:

There doesn’t seem to be a link between the two. DS version comes out November 19 2009 and will ONLY be sold on amazon.co.jp!!!

A second Wizardry DS? I guess they’re taking the success of Etrian Odyssey and such to heart.

The Japanese Wizardry games are one of the main reasons I wish I could learn Japanese with a finger snap. I’m not the biggest fan of masochistic dungeon crawlers, but I’d love to see how the series evolved parallel to the Sir-Tech games. There’s so damn many of them (three, four dozen?), it’s hard for me to accept that it’s because of the merit of the games themselves instead of the zeal of the fanbase.

Ah thanks for this! Really interesting considering the DS game is being done by Genterprise?! Wizardry passes from publisher to publisher like a holiday fruitcake.

There is a bit of info on over at 1up http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3175349

The rights holder is Gamepot, their subdivision IPM is apparently producing and the DS and PS3 games have been subcontracted. They are also doing an online Wizardry and a manga.

The DS and PS3 games seem linked, BTW:

“Iwahara gave few other details on the Renaissance project for now, only stating that the games will all share a single setting and some key characters. The main staff working on the reboot are familiar names to hardcore Japan gamers, though — Jun Suemi and Kenji Ito, both involved with the original (and wildly successful) NES ports of the Wizardry series, are handling graphic design and theme music respectively. “

Hopefully they allow you to draw your own maps on the touch screen, EO style.

      • Ereek

Ugh, no thanks. Leave Wizardry like it was.

        • MadMirko

          But that’s how Wizardry was…

Well, no touch screen back then, but pencil and paper for maps would be inconventient to carry around along with the DS.
