God of War Opens The Door For Remastered PS2 Ports

By Spencer . August 31, 2009 . 12:19pm

image Sony Computer Entertainment America announced God of War Collection, a PlayStation 3 compilation containing God of War and God of War 2 running at 720p with anti-aliased graphics. Fancy jargon for a crisper and more fluid looking game.

But, God of War Collection is more or less the same two PS2 games with trophies. Bluepoint Games, the studio behind Blast Factor for PlayStation Network, is handling the work.

The God of War Collection announcement also shows that Sony and Bluepoint Games have a system ready to remaster and visually improve PlayStation 2 games. Sony’s God of War series may be an exception since it’s critically acclaimed and a commercial success, but Sony could remaster and re-release other PlayStation 2 and perhaps PSP hits.

Imagine Dark Cloud 2 or Dissidia: Final Fantasy remastered as budget PS3 games. Would you buy them?

Finally, an answer to my prayers. Now I can play PS2 games on my HDTV!!!

  • I have a backlog of Sony games I need to play so a Ratchet or Sly Cooper collection would be awesome.

  • Pichi

I wouldn’t go for it if I have already played the games, but I can see those who love trophies would do it all over again. For games I haven’t yet played/have gotten to buy, I’ll jump to it.

would like to see this treatment to ICO. that game is out of print and never got to play it.

GOW bluray is great since I only played the psp version.

    This is sweet news….

Meh. I remember back when the PS3 was being rolled out, seeing an interview with one of the head Sony guys. One of the key reasons for buying the PS3 was backwards compatibility, being able to play your accumulated software library.

Sony really seemed to drop that almost immediately after launch. But now they are trying to re-sell people stuff they already have.

A good emulator in the PS3 could have graphically enhanced PS2 titles. The one in the 360 does that with 360 games. Granted, MS didn’t put a lot of effort into it either, so it doesn’t work on all titles, but some, like NFS: Underground 2 look great (the 3d parts, anyway, can’t really improve 2d stuff which is low res). Heck, I was disappointed when I got NFS Carbon, it looked worse than NFS:U2 looked.

But this way, Sony saves money by not including hardware based BC in the PS3, by not even developing an emulator (like MS did), but simply re-selling popular PS2 games.

And I hate to say it, but I think this is going to be the future. No more backward support, and with DRM on the rise, the games we “buy” are only going to last a few years.

Over at Neogaf, here’s a post with pictures of GoW running in high res on a PS2 emulator for the PC

Looks pretty spiffy. But I guess no money for Sony if they had an emulator like that in the PS3…

Agreed, I tried playing MGS 3 and FF12 on my PS3 before (60Gb w/ hardware BC), and the upscaling make both of those games look really good and smooth on a big HD TV. Too bad no B/C for the slim, otherwise I would’ve gotten a second one and gave my fat PS3 to my sis, but I still need it to play PS2 games.

yeah, I think all the success Wii has had with re-makes has made them think they can make a lot of money too on them. I think they can have the BC and sell these enhanced repackages like Wii does.

yeah, you will need to keep your old systems or rebuy, hope it isnt going to be like that. I am guessing/hoping ps4 will play ps3 titles since the architectures will probably be similar. also hope you can transfer psn titles too.

I heard that Sony is going to release a firmware update for the Slim PS3 that allows PS2 playback. Is that true?

I would buy a PS2 to PS3 port of any game as long as I like the title. If I’ve played it before, it would have to be a really good game for me to buy it again.

  • Imagine having all of the Final Fantasy games on one disc. Good stuff.

  • shion16

sony knows that their best games still being PS2 ones
so its a good idea to bring them back

  • donnyfal

Dissida remastered? It just came out…

  • jarrodand

I’d like to see this treatment given to ICO and Shadow of the Colossus as a precursor to The Last Guardian.

  • Danny93

I would love to see sega do Shinobi and nightshade remastered like 2 of the greatsest ninja ps2 games, just sega would have to lower or m ake difficulty options too lol
