Atlus Has A Halloween Treat For Demon’s Souls Players

By Spencer . October 29, 2009 . 5:49pm

Or you might consider this a trick if you weren’t expecting the servers to turn all of the lands in Demon’s Souls pure black.

Under pure black world tendency enemies are tougher, but drop better items. Special computer controlled Black Phantoms appear and terrorize players in specific locations too. The good news? Primeval Demons pop up so this weekend will be a great time to collect Colorless Demon’s Souls.

Great to see Atlus playing with the servers. I haven’t seen an announcements from Sony Computer Entertainment Japan about an equivalent event.

  • I…have a party to attend D: I hope they keep this going for more then Halloween.

    • ElTopo

I know I’m totally gonna be in another city…bust right?

    • Soma

I’m sorry that you will be missing out on this event, Tim.
But, the party is going to be awesome. =3

I also wish that I could be playing Demon’s Souls on Halloween. The event sounds totally rad!
Making a great game even more fun? *thumbs up*
What else would we expect from Atlus?

  • Ereek

Well, at least getting to pure black will save you some eyes. And it’s easy to turn it to pure white from there, too.

I bought the Collector’s Edition in time and haven’t opened it, then I thought I might not like this game enough to warrant CE, sold that and got the cheaper regular edition instead by taking advantage of the Buy 2 get 3rd free deal from Best Buy. But after reading more reviews I think the ultra hard difficulty is beyond me so I’m switching my order to Ratchet and Clank a Crack in Time :(…. Call me a wuss, even though I’m very curious about this hardcore RPG, I’m actually scared of tackling this game (one I don’t like dying repeatedly, two I don’t want to devote my soul to this demon of a game..) So that’s my experience w/ Demon’s Souls, never had a game caused me so much stress on whether to purchase/play it or not..

    • ElTopo

Just play it. It’s only hard until you start to learn how to play, at least rent it and try it out. Shame you returned you CE, Atlus sold out of them and they aren’t coming back.

      • Aoshi00

Actually I just got off the phone w/ Best Buy, who gave me a hell of a hard time, and told me I can’t switch to Ratchet & Clank even though Demon’s Souls is on backorder since I bought it as a discounted bundle, looks like I would be stuck w/ the regular edition of Demon’s Souls. I know the CE is nice and all, guess now I have no choice but to give the game a chance and if I don’t like it, at least it only cost me $43 instead of $66.99… Damn Best Buy, I’m walking to the store to try my luck, if they don’t let me cancel Demon’s Souls, I guess fate wants me to play that game.

And all the games are “unopened”, the rep was going on policy this and that, and I was being patient and reasonable too, argh..the game is on backorder for christ’s sake, just what I need..

        • ElTopo

Play the damn game! Its my GoTY. Seriously, one of the best action RPGs to come out in a long time, great old school gameplay. Best Buy is corporate douchebaggery at its finest. Do you have he receipt? I don’t think they take them unopened because it could be stolen, thats how it is at douchestop at least (friend told me). RIP Circuit City, they would take anything as long as it was unopened.

          • Aoshi00

Yeah, I got the receipt. I picked up Uncharted 2 & NGS2, and w/ Demon’s Soul reg ed on backorder. I just done sending them an e-mail requesting for a change to Ratchet & Clank a Crack in Time since it’s available in the store right now instead of need to wait for 1-2 weeks, and if they say no, I would just play the dang game. What pisses me off was if I want to return all 3 games, she said I would be charged the difference at the regular price (so I paid $120, I would be penalized $60 for returning 3 games unopened w/ a receipt, that’s bullcrap). It’s not the end of the world, but all this unnecessary aggravation…

I know the game is really rewarding for those who could put up w/ the challenge. Maybe I just worry for nothing from by reading too many reviews saying it’s the hardest game ever, or it could be the most fun… how would you say compared to FFXII, I know one is semi turn-based and one is action, would you say XII is much easier than Demon’s Souls?

          • Ereek

The game isn’t the hardest ever. It’s difficult for the first sections, but once you figure it out, it’s actually not too bad.

I think if there’s any turn based RPG I’d compare it to it would be Wizardry. If you come into an area prepared, you shouldn’t have any problems finishing it. I felt FFXII was pretty easy, so it’s definitely easier than Demon’s Souls.

          • ElTopo

Its a totally different kind of difficulty. The one thing I noticed from reading all the reviews, almost every reviewer kept stating the same thing, the game was hard but incredibly fair. The game challenges you within a set of rules, to learn and adapt to a situation. Every time you die your going to why you died and learn from it, allowing you to go back and try again, and should you succeed your get a great sense of accomplishment. It’s this challenge vs reward system that Demons Souls uses to really push you through a trial and error process.

Once you understand the mechanics of the game, it becomes a lot easier to play through.

Thats total bullshit. I dont know where you live but thats basically illegal in California. Best Buy is an absolutely terrible company. I would read through their return policy real quick, call up and start demanding to talk to managers and higher ups. Just keep complaining farther up the corporate ladder about how terrible the service was until someone fixes it. They will.

          • Aoshi00

Thanks for the advice guys, I guess if Best Buy doesn’t let me exchange/return, it ain’t all bad.

@El Topo: That’s the thing, I’ve actually had the whole return policy read to me, and I think they’re stick to every meaning of the word, I’ve also demanded to speak w/ a higher up but she said no exception can be made after consulting w/ a manager. I just went to their policy page and this is what it says, and I don’t think it looks good if they’re really being an ass about it.

            Promotional items and bundles

As a benefit to our customers, Best Buy occasionally offers promotional items and savings with a purchase or enhanced savings on a bundle of items when they are purchased together.

            * When a promotional item is returned, the value of the promotional item is deducted from the refund amount. For instance, if you purchase a TV and get a $100 gift card or 50% off of a DVD player, the $100 value of the gift card or the total value of the DVD player would be subtracted from the refund.
            * When an item included as part of a promotional bundle is returned, the bundled discount is void and the value of the bundled discount will be applied to the refund. This occasionally results in additional funds being owed to Best Buy. For instance, if you receive $200 in savings when you purchase a laptop and printer together and you return either item, the $200 amount will be subtracted from your refund.

But like you guys said, it’s no big deal if Demon’s Souls is a good game and worth a shot. I’m not about to be handing them $60 for nothing for a stupid incomplete refund. I could go to the store and speak w/ the manager, but if I understand the policy up there correctly (which I’m not aware of, usually you’re able to return anything sealed for full credit), they could very well turn down my request even if I walk in.

          • Aoshi00

reason I compared it to FFXII is because it was MMO-like, and to set a good gambit that runs smooth also required trails and errors, and one needed to be equipped w/ weapons/armors w/ good stats and attributes to get an upper hand depending on the situation. FFXII was actually very hard for me the first time around as I was totally short of gil to buy anything or License points to obtain the necessary skills. Also I didn’t know acquiring all quickenings would triple each characters’ MP which was a heck of a lot more helpful. And if you’re not careful and wander into a field, monsters could swarm you and bring you untimely demise, which I have a feeling Demon’s Souls is also like. I guess I won’t know until I try this out myself.

so… is it perma black world tendency all halloween night? O.o;; or are we still allowed to push it up to white tendency? XD cuz this just makes it all the easier for me trying to get all the pure black and pure white events going for me X3 (i still need Worlds 3, 4, and 5)

  • Chow

I guess I better just go ahead and go into NG+ so I can reap all the events for PBWT without the trouble of manually getting there.

  • malek86

Awesome. Too bad it’s probably only for the US.

  • Marcus70

That’s nice of Atlus to change the world to black for a limited time, I wonder if they will turn it to white for Christmas?

This game isn’t really hard, its just time consuming. So the question for new purchasers of the game is, do you have the time? After all, you can level up your character to 712 (but that would take a really long time of course). If they wanted to make this game hard you should lose all of your equipment and items your carrying if you died, instead of just losing souls.

The Wizardry games from the 1980s were alot more punishing than Demon Souls. If you died in those games and the temple healers failed to revive you, you turned into ashes. If the temple healers failed again, your character (including their gold and equipment) was gone forever.

  • ndjn3979

Lawl, and here I thought there was a DLC coming (implied by Kotaku). Better than wasting multiple Ephemeral Eyes just to get black tendency, I guess.

  • kupomogli

I’m going to a party that is more than likely going to be shorted just because I’ll want to play through Demon’s Souls. I wish I didn’t have to go to work tomorrow.
