Zhu Zhu DS box One of this holiday season’s hottest toys for kids is getting a video game thanks to Activision.

The publisher of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Bakugan picked up the rights to put Zhu Zhu Pets franchise and announced a Nintendo DS game for spring 2010. “Zhu Zhu Pets success in 2009 speaks for itself and we’re confident it will be even bigger in 2010,” said David Oxford at Activision Publishing.

Here’s what the game looks like.

I was hoping for this.

…It had to happen eventually, with the sudden popularity of these things. Maybe it’s just me, but these things just came out of nowhere. I had no idea what they were until maybe a few weeks ago… but then, none of my friends and family have young children for these things, so I guess I’m a bit out of the loop for this sort of thing.

    • Looking back, A LOT of things just came out of nowhere as a kid; yo-yos, marbles, pogs, etc. There’s these things called Webkinz that a few kids go gag for, which I guess is sort of like a Tamagachi implemented to a stuffed animal and online account(?).

oh, my little brother has two of them. You buy the plushie and it comes with a code. You enter the code on the webkins website and you basically take care of your webkin online. You build a house, play with it, feed it, etc. Sort of like Neopets, except without the games. Thing is, it only lasts for a year, then you have to buy another one, or pay with your visa to renew membership. :/

My brother was really into it for a month of two because his friend also had an account, but then he dropped it (kind of like me and my friend with tamagachis back in the day…)

Siliconera tricked me into watching six minutes of nothingness! I was expecting something to happen in that virtual hamster game, yet nothing did. Curse you siliconera, I want my six minutes back!

    • Ah, sorry! That was a joke because Virtua Hamster was a lost 32X game. On second thought only a few people (maybe nobody?) got it!

      • Joanna

Never heard of the title before, so the joke went over my head. Not really as angry as my reply makes it me out to be. XD
I was mesmerized by all the shiny colors and kept watching. XD

      • Hahahah! Spencer, you got me good. I’ve never heard of ZhuZhu pets so here I’m thinking Virtua Hamster had a revival (well not revival since it never exactly got out the door) but I thought Activision bought the rights and created these things… So THIS is what ZhuZhu is? A hamster? I heard this was the new big toy this year. Well, now I know–at least after a good laugh.

That Virtua Hamster game reminds me very much of the Sonic 2 special stages, except that the 2D sprites of Sonic 2 aged much better than early (well, not really) polygonal games.

My hamster would **** her pants if I strapped a rocket to her back and forced her into a tube like that.

    • I hated partnering up with Tails in that level!

My niece asked for Zhu Zhu Pets for Christmas, but instead I got her Elite Beat Agents. She’ll thank me later ……hopefully.
