Here’s Some New Red Steel 2 Info… From Famitsu

http://storage.siliconera.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/rabbid_sword.jpg If you frequent Japanese game sites, you’ll notice several of them now include western games in their coverage, which is a sign that they’re either becoming more accepted in that market or that the games press in Japan is having a little trouble with the size of their audience. Either way, games like Assassin’s Creed 2 and Call of Duty, and even analyst stories from the USA are now included alongside Japanese news.

Recently, Famitsu magazine actually went a step further and flew out to Ubisoft in France to get the scoop on Red Steel 2 and some other interesting stuff. Here are some interesting tidbits from the interview:

- In terms of content, the game is 95% complete. If you take debugging into account, it’s at about 90%.

- The new cel-shaded art style was a decision made to suit Wii MotionPlus integration.

– Movies like Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai and Kim Ji-woon’s The Good, the Bad, the Weird were used as sources of inspiration.1

- You’ll be able to dual-wield guns in the game at some point. This seems to be part of the additional moves you can acquire (using money) as you progress through the game.

- There are about 40 different types of enemies in the game in total, including bosses, spanning across three different clans.

- When the Famitsu editor asked how they came up with the Japanese names for the clans, the team replied they used Google. They were actually looking for words which didn’t mean anything in particular but Famitsu’s editor pointed out to them that "Kusagari" — one of the clans – works since “kusa” (literally “grass”) was once used for ninja.  Lucky for them it fits. "Katakara," on the other hand, doesn’t mean anything.2

1. Ishaan’s note: Seven Samurai has made a pretty big splash outside of Japan since its release. Everyone from George Lucas to Indian film directors have made references to it in their movies. The Good, the Bad, the Weird debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in 2004.
2. Ishaan’s note: Bwahaha. The tables have been turned. Take that, Infinite Undiscovery!

“The new cel-shaded art style was a decision made to suit Wii MotionPlus integration.”

    I don't get it.

    I love the “Ishaan's Notes”. A nice touch. ^^

That's because it makes no sense.

Just a guess, but it probably involves freeing up resources for MotionPlus.

Haha, thanks. You're giving me an excuse to do more of them!

Kusa is also slang for the other kind of “grass”.

I like them too. Do more please! :D

So the MotionPlus's signal is more complicated to process than the Wiimote's, to the detriment of graphics processing? Does this mean that the Wii will be the first console whose visuals get less detailed over its life-cycle, as more of its already-rarified computing juice gets siphoned off for high-powered input? The drama persists.

I guess it depends to what extent you implement MotionPlus and how often it recalibrates itself.

Since Red Steel 2 is entirely based around accurately following your actions onscreen, the remote recalibrates itself to the centre of the screen each time you point it at the sensor bar (aka very often). Obviously, something like Tiger Woods or whatever is less affected by this sort of thing.

I guess that's the biggest problem with WM+. It goes out of calibration way too often. I wonder if that's the result of low-cost technology (we do pay only 20$ for it), or it simply can't be helped.

Yup, that certainly is the downside to the lower price. It'll be interesting to see how much Sony charge for their “Gem” once it's out. They really need to change that name to something that communicates the concept better though, if they want it to have mass-market appeal. Maybe “wand” or something.
