SNK Cleans Up NeoGeo Battle Coliseum’s Sprites

NeoGeo Battle Coliseum is heading to Xbox Live Arcade this spring with some revised sprite work.

Like many of SNK’s fighting games, NeoGeo Battle Coliseum was not designed with HDTVs in mind. So, SNK went back to the drawing board (literally) and made new character art. Those pictures above compare Ai and Yuki from the PlayStation 2 release to the new Ai and Yuki in the upcoming Xbox 360 version.

NeoGeo Battle Coliseum uses the new artwork for the character select screen and has updated 3D backgrounds. Head over to Famitsu for another look.

That’s interesting. NGBC had a decent sized fallowing for a few years, but I wasn’t sure that many people still played that with all the fighters recently released. It might bring a few players back, which is never a bad thing.

Admittedly, even though HD isn’t my thing (yet), even I thought the game looked like it threw up pixels on itself, at least on the PS2 version.
There are lots of SNK games I’d like to see get cleaned up. The art and style of their games in the 90s just blew my mind when I first saw them. Even when I didn’t have any quarters I was always on the look out for their games and just trip out on the demos.

It looks more like the sprites were filtered if anything. Also, some of these “cleaned up” sprites look a little odd; such as Kisarah. The surprising thing, is they haven’t changed or gotten rid of those ridiculous hit flashes, which annoyed me about NGBC. I also found the jagged edged sprites to always be a part of the charm of a lot of SNK Playmore games.

Those must be some nice filters to make the sprites look much clearer and with some added details. No way would a filter make Yuki’s face look that much better.

it looks like they tweaked the sprites AND ran a filter. i am not a fan at all. i like pixels. had SNK given the option to turn the filters off (along with those crappy wallpapers) on their previous xbla releases, i would have bought them all.

Man, those HD sprites look slick as all hell. Even though the netcode will probably be crap as per SNK standard, it’s nice to see them taking the extra effort for graphics. :D

Why no love for the PSN?

    • Advent_Andaryu

Yeah, I’d love for this to be on the PS3. The original was on PS2 so maybe it will be time release or something… The original was good, but had plenty of room for improvement.

actually i think there is a good chance that SNK has tons of love for the psn, but sony is blocking them. Remember how snk wanted to release king of fighters games on the ps2 at full price and sony wouldnt let them, forcing them to release value priced double packs?

Glad that it’s not just a straight port. I already have it on PS2, and had no interest in it being on XBLA, but now that it could be better than the PS2 version, we’ll see… if the price is right!

  • ChaoofNee

They fixed up the sprites. Wonderful!

…but will they fix up the netcode? All the nice sprites in the world won’t help a fighter tht’s completely unplayable online. Y’know, like every other fighter they’ve released thus far…
