New Game From A Popular Strategy RPG Series To Be Revealed Next Week

By Spencer . March 3, 2010 . 3:00am

image Famitsu has a pending announcement about a popular strategy RPG franchise. Next week, the mag will reveal a brand new entry in the mystery series.

No other details were given so we’re left to guess. Popular is a pretty big hint though. Final Fantasy Tactics? Fire Emblem? Disgaea? Shining Forc– wait a second, is Shining still considered a tactics series?

Anyway, my bet’s on Disgaea since Nippon Ichi said they are working on a new Disgaea game for PlayStation 3.

    New Fire Emblem please.

    It’s about damn time.

  • JeremyR

A new Ogre Battle. The suits at Square realized they were losing their soul, like Activision, and finally decided to do the right thing and give the property to Matsuno, who is then going to produce Ogre Battle Wii and be published by Nintendo (which will end up making me buy a Wii. That’s the only reason I bought a N64..).

That could be true. Except it won’t. And even if it were, probably end up being for the iPhone..

    • thebanditking

If S-E did an Ogre Battle it would not be for the Wii, the most likely place to see the series end up is PSP or DS.

    • jarrodand

Nintendo should just buy the Ogre IP off Square and fund a new start up studio for Matsuno. That’s about the only way I could see a new Ogre game happening.

    • ElTopo

I would love to see a new squad based SRPG like Ogre Batte 64, probably won’t happen though

  • sths

That list is not complete. Other SRPG series such as Front Mission, Super Robot Taisen and even Advanced Wars can be it.

My money is on Super Robot Taisen, as Takanobu Terada recently hinted at the announcement of a new title.

Secretly I wish it is Langrisser, but that is not going to happen.

    • thebanditking

Well since S-E killed Front Mission with the yet to be released Western developed one, I seriously doubt they would show off a new proper entry in the series.
Langrisser? Yeah thats not going to happen.

    • Ereek

Oh God, more Langrisser or Growlanser please.

    • Code

rar, I’d kill for a new Advance Wars game, seriously, especially if it had all the original CO’s back >w< although I wouldn't mind seeing some of DoR's balances, and change carried over too.

      • thebanditking

I would also love to see Advance Wars return but only if it was like the GBA games. I was not a big fan of the last one on DS.

        • Code

Yeah agreed Days of Ruin, I just didn’t like either. The only thing I thought was decent about it is it had some nice unit changes, cut the arms race that has been going on with the tanks in the last few AW games, and rewarded players for keeping units alive. Definitely want 1, 2 and Dual Strike’s style back though with any new ones added to the series.

  • Yuan

Looking at recenty, NIS and Falcom always announced their games on Dengeki PS first before Famitsu (at least a week earlier), I don’t think it will be Disgaea.
    And for Shining, it’s unlikely.
I think it’ll be Super Robot Taisen.

  • thebanditking

Final Fantasy Tactics will likely not be returning for quite some time so I don’t think its that.

Fire Embelm is take it or leave it for me, I was never a big fan of the series (More of a Tactics Ogre guy) Though like Spencer said my money is on Disgaea likely for PS3.

    • raymk

yeap i like tatics ogre too but there hasn’t been a new game in ages and fire emblems an ok game as it has a decent story to tell

      • thebanditking

My problem with Fire Emblem is the fact that when a character dies they are gone for good. In a strat RPG you work so hard grinding your characters stats and job class abilities that having even one character go down the drain is a major blow. For that reason I never liked the Fire Embelm series as I had to hit reset too often. I have not played one in a really long time have they fixed that aspect of the series?

        • Code

Exact same problem I had, Fire Emblem was pretty much the first and one of the only games I had ever literally dropped — I played through half it, and I just couldn’t deal with how expendable characters were, and how it could really weaken your team, unless you did restart. Probably will never buy another FE game again after that experience x_x’

          • Joanna

really? I always liked that about FE because it forced me to be on my toes and not make stupid moves that got my characters killed. But each to his/her own. I for one cannot stand the tension of FPS, so I avoid them like the plague.

  • Pichi

Best bet is probably either Disgaea 4 or one of the Super Robot games. Would love to see Fire Emblem or a Final Fantasy Tactics or Advance game.

  • Dark_Sage

It’s definitely Disgaea 4, but whenever an announcement like this comes around, I’m always secretly hoping it’s a sequel to Final Fantasy Tactics. I’ve waited 12 years. 12 years!

    • Code

      But FFT sucked >w<'

      • MrMee

woops, that was an accident. I feel the exact opposite.

        • Code

Haha >w<; that's alright I didn't mean it — Dark Sage basically said to me two weeks ago that "Chrono Trigger sucked" figure I'd try that out~ but didn't like it so much after I said it. Not my thing though I guess!

          • FireCouch

            rar rar rar

          • thebanditking

Glad to see you were joking. If you really though FFT was bad I would seriously question what you though was good. Oh and how can anyone hate Chrono Trigger it is a timless masterpiece.

          • Code

Ask Dark Sage x_x; I dunno who could hate Chrono Trigger either, it was such a good game >w<' Admittedly I am really not all that hot on FFT (or GBA ones, or even Tactic Ogre for that matter), but I do recognize it's more my own tastes, then the games themselves. rar, seriously though I got raped by chocobos so many times in FFT, it really kind of ruined the experience for me T__T'

          • Dark_Sage

No, you’re just blinded by nostalgia. I played it a year ago and it was terrible. Characters? Worthless. Story? Non-existent. Battle system? Boring. Honestly, I can think of nothing redeeming about the game.

Even worse was, I really wanted to like it. I was really excited to finally play the “greatest game ever” only to find out it’s worse than most every RPG I’ve played. :(

          • Code

Blinded by nostalgia? rar, that was kind of a shot in the dark >w<' I practically play CT yearly — I usually always like to have a game in my SNES to pick away at on the side among newer releases. If anything sounds like your blinded by your own tastes~ owo'

          • Joanna

but I played it not that long ago as well (a few years back) because I missed it during the SNES era and I thought it did live up to all it’s hype. So I think not all of us like it because of nostalgia. Maybe RPGs aren’t your cup of tea?

In my opinion, the story and characters were charming and the battle system refreshing (there are still few RPGs that have visible enemies and traditional turned based battle system, most that have visible enemies go the ARPG route).

  • Disgaea 4 pls xD

  • I’m just going to assume it’s Disgaea and be pleasantly surprised if I’m wrong.

  • Ereek

I’m going to go with Sakura Taisen, just because no one has mentioned it yet.

    • I love you sometimes, Ereek.

      • Ereek

Aw, I love you too. But I love you all the time.

        • I’m glad you said that first. It would’ve sounded creepier coming from me. :P

  • malek86

Yeah, it’s probably going to be Disgaea 4. If it’s not, that would actually be cool, because hey, unexpected stuff is awesome.

  • Code

    There’s a few strategy series I wouldn’t mind seeing sequels to, so honestly it’s pretty much win/win. rar, it’s definitely Disgaea 4 though, which would be good in my books. I kind of hope they try migrating from it being such a grindy game though, Disgaea 3 wasn’t too bad but only because of a few exploits which honestly I felt made the pace of the game marginally better >w<;

  • nyoron

I love Disgaea to death but I’m starting to get bored of the netherworld… I’d really like to see a new NIS SRPG using the Disgaea game systems but a different setting.

  • heartless141

popular SRPG franchise. Disgaea, Valkyria Chronicles is the only one possible i can think of right now. screw FF tactic. :P

while i am hoping for a VC2 HD version, Disgaea 4 would slaughter anything else.

  • Guest

New Fire Emblem with beautiful 2D sprites again plz….

    • lucy1986

I second that! Not that I didn’t love the GC and Wii games but my GBA cartridges see far more action. 2D love all the way :)

I do love a good Disgaea but….not for PS3. All the Disgaea lovers I know have either a 360 or a Wii……..all the PS3 owner’s I know are like “Disgaea? Oh that’s that cutesy japanese stuff, waste of an engine on those sprites isn’t it?”

  • kupomogli

Popular strategy RPG? FFTactics, Disgaea, Fire Emblem, Super Robot Taisen, Front Mission, Shining Force, etc.

I’d rather see a good strategy RPG over popular. Tactics Ogre, Ogre Battle, or FFTactics.

  • Kuza21

If it’s Disgaea 4. It better have revamped graphics. I’m not one to complain about graphics, but seriously guys. Your moving on to PS3. Act like it.

    • Hraesvelgr

Or just stick it on the PSP, like they were supposed to.

      • thebanditking

I could not agree more. Disgaea 1 and 2 look fantastic on PSP Im still hoping they port the PS3 one to PSP as well so I can have the entire series portable. Though I agree with Kuza if Disgaea is a PS3 game then at least make it look similar to Ar Tonelico 3 or Atelier Rorona.

      • Yeah, bending my neck to look at a small screen for 9-12 hours straight sounds like a great idea…

I applaud you for being able to do that. But myself I want to be able to lie down comfortably in bed and have the game display on a nice TV instead of the tiny screen of a PSP. Espacially when it comes to a game like Disgaea.

        But to each his/her own.

    • Hm, Agarest: Generations of War is on PS3 and it has 2d graphics in it. I never saw anyone complain about that…

So why are people complaining about NIS choice of graphics when moving the Disgaea series to PS3?

While on the subject, let´s throw a off topic question about Last Rebellion, what was so great with those graphics?

As for AT3, sure it does look good, but it is a bit different subject to have a RPG where you roam around in 3d and having a SRPG in complete 3d instead of the classical type of mixed 2d and 3d like Disgaea has always had.

  • Hraesvelgr

Oh boy, can’t wait for Front Missio–oh wait.

    • Pesmerga00

      Me neither!
Now I made myself sad. :(

  • Chow

If it’s Disgaea 4, I better get started on my Disgaea 3 trophies, as well as *start* the Raspberyl chapters. XP

  • Sam

I am secretly hoping for Persona 5…… I mean, it is always a possibility ._.

However Disgaea 4 is definitely something else I am really looking forward to :)

    • Code

      rar, I don’t think Persona 5 counts as a strategy/rpg >w<; Although regardless Persona 5, do want.

      • Sam

Ah true….. RPG caught my eye more than Strategy.

Either way…. fingers crossed for either xD

  • Please be Fire Emblem
