Valhalla Developing “Super Dreadnought Class Project For HD Home Consoles”

By Spencer . March 5, 2010 . 4:57pm

Valhalla Game Studios, a newly formed company developer with Dead or Alive creator Tomonobu Itagaki and Satoshi Kanematsu, is working on of a “big project for high definition game consoles.” The studio is hiring for a variety of positions ranging from concept artist and game designer too.

“This is something in the future, but once our game is finished, give us 5 minutes of your time. Once you start, you can’t let go of the controller. We are making that kind of game. We only think about this,” said Itagaki about the unannounced game.

The website has interviews with the staff and… pictures of Itagaki sans sunglasses.

Hm.. the dude just got a settlement w/ Tecmo, maybe that’s why he has money to open up a new studio.. Not a fan of his personality, but it ‘s good to see him back in the game.

    • thebanditking

Agreed. He really is a DH, but he does genuinely like gaming and has made some excellent titles so far so its good to see him back working on games. Got to say though he looks so much more friendly without the sunglasses. Maybe his pink slip from Tecmo and some time off made him think about the kind of person he was and now we will have a more palatable Itagaki.

    • MisterNiwa

Not only is he an asshole who thinks he is some kind of prodigy, he also is an idiot to think whatever he touches is gold. :I

I could care less about this title, unless its some great revolution in the video game industry.

  • nyoron

The ninja is now a viking eh? I’ve enjoyed almost all of his games so I’m really looking forward to what he comes up with. Personally I hope it’s not a shooter… but even then I’d be willing to give it a shot.

  • Eddie

I have to agree, I am happy he is back but he could have left his personality. Here is what he said in a recent interview, I thought it was kinda funny.
“At my previous company, I made the best fighting game in the world, Dead or Alive. Fighting games have once again reached a dead end, although to be honest, if there was no Dead or Alive, fighting games would have ended a long time ago.”

    • Mazen

I dont know why even thought I don’t care for DOA and I like VF more I don’t find his statement offending its obvious he is saying it in a direct and light hearted way and I found all his interview not offending as its also obvious he want to be entertaining.

      • Eddie

I enjoy DOA but I do like Virtua Fighter more. As far as Itagaki’s statements to me some of them are not needed. Sometime him being frank can simply just be him being rude. Some of the things he says I can agree with, but most things I kind of just give a blank stare. I guess I could say he almost reminds me of Bobby Kotick, the only difference being I do not care for Bobby Kotick at all. But speaking of Virtua Fighter… Virtua Fighter 5 has excellent graphics like pure crisp clean graphics. (Off topic I know)

        • Mazen

Yeah AM2 always are wizards when it comes to graphics shame they mostly work on arcades now.

          • thebanditking

More like its a shame Yu Suzuki had to “step down” and take a less involved role at Sega. Post Sega/Sammy merger they really treated their former heads of staff quite poorly.

          • SlashZaku

Really hoping Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown hits consoles since they skipped out on VF5R. VF5 was my first PS3 title and seeing everything they’ve been adding to it since (don’t care for online so that’s not really what I’m asking for) really makes me wish they’d release a new version with all that content.

    • thebanditking

He was always a bit full of himself. Though I think most of it was for show, I seriously doubt he is that confident about himself or his work. Though I disagree about fighting games hitting a dead end, Street Fighter 4 and Blaz Blue are fantastic. Though if he were to only compair DOA to Namco’s Tekken and SoulCalibur then he hit the nail on the head (Virtua Fighter is still the deepest fighter on the market though).

  • bobhoskins

All this guy does is talk smack, talk out of his ass, and never walks the walk. >_>

Move along people. Nothing to see here.

    • Hraesvelgr

Dude, Itagaki is awesome… even if I don’t like any of his games.

      • bobhoskins

        Are you being sarcastic?

Total and complete douchebag =/= awesome. Unless being a complete douche is what all the cool kids do these days.

        • Hraesvelgr

No, I’m serious. He’s awesome in the “so ridiculous and over-the-top, it’s awesome” kind of way. Not really a “good” kind of awesome, just that his comments are so nonsensical that I’m amused by him. So he’s awesome.

  • Oh man, I am loving that Programmer Cross Talk.

  • SlashZaku

Like his games, hate him, or atleast, his personality and interviews. He’s just too high up on himself. And I’m curious about the wording of the article: “high definition consoles”. The ‘consoles’ bit specifically, as he’s been pretty anti-Sony/PS since the PS2 era after DOA2HC. I’d be surprised if he’s bringing his next title to the PS3 unless he’s done a complete 180 since going under the radar.

    • Hraesvelgr

Who knows. Unless it was a wording error, it seems pretty silly to say “consoles” if only one is meant.

    • JeremyR

As a new studio, probably doesn’t have a lot of choice. Publishers would want to maximize the return by having it on both consoles (unless it is MS, which I think would make sense for them at least)

    • thebanditking

Itagaki said a while back that while his “love” of Xbox is well documented he said that as a new studio trying to make a name for its self and given the market breakdown that his next title would likely be multiplat.

  • banballow

So, how did the settlement with Tecmo go? They agree to pay up, but he had to lose the trademark sunglasses? Was it worth it Itagaki?… was it really?

  • ndjn3979

I don’t know guys, I hate him because he dogs on Tekken, but in that statement above, there’s nothing indicative of his famous personality. Perhaps the same kind of ambition, but none of the characteristic disrespect.

  • thebanditking

Though where does it say “HD Consoles”? On the job posting page it says “HD console” at the top. Spencer did they change this after you posted or was this mentioned elsewhere in the interview and I missed it?

  • If you completely ignore his overly pompous attitude and his constant promises of delusions of grandeur you can usually enjoy his games. At least, that’s how I look at it. The man makes games that aren’t terrible by any means but to claim such greatness all the time-well, I’m just hoping he’s turned a new leaf with this new studio. =)
