Xenoblade Trailer Introduces Heroine, Maybe?

By Spencer . April 7, 2010 . 9:56am

Nintendo posted a new clip of Xenoblade on the Nintendo Channel in Japan. Instead of sword swinging, this video shows a long haired dude and a doe eyed girl.

Maybe she is Xenoblade’s heroine. Maybe not. I don’t think we’ve seen her before, but the blonde boy she’s sitting next to was the lead character in the Monado: Beginning of the World trailer at E3. Wow, for a spring release, we don’t know much about the game’s characters.

This looks like it’s going to be awesome.

    • MrMee

The graphics look like they were ripped right out of Final Fantasy XII, which isn’t a bad thing. It’s not like the Wii can do a whole lot better. I personally like the art direction.

  • zhemos

    I think it looks terrible.

  • FireCouch

    Looks like a PSP game

    • http://gplus.to/rootbeerking RootBeerKing

I’ve seen PSP games better looking than this…

      • FireCouch

Exactly, looks like a mediocre psp game.

  • malek86

Admittedly the graphics look real bad. Still, maybe the game will end up being awesome. Who knows.

  • kupomogli

Looks like it’d go on the PSX, N64, or DS.

    • Ereek

It looks nothing like a PSX game, or DS or N64, for that matter.

      • kupomogli

I was at work so didn’t watch the video. I judged it based off the thumbnail to be honest. After watching the video I’d say it would probably fit on PS2. Maybe PSP but PSP doesn’t look quite as detailed overall.

    • Jaxx-Leviathan

Sure it’s not very pretty but that’s a ridiculous notion. It’s less than Wii standard, a lot less than other high-def consoles, but it can’t be compared to DS and not at all consoles two generations ago.

  • Jaxx-Leviathan

Not much information on this game, eh… this ‘trailer’ doesn’t help. Practically the only information we get here are names. The blonde kid is named Sid and the girl Fiore. Was surprised at their faces in profile, their nosebones are way dominant.

    Can’t say I’m liking those character designs…

    • Ereek

Oh, I don’t know, I have a weakness for guys with long dark hair.

Other than that, I agree. I can’t say I’m the biggest fan of the clothing designs.

    • BK0000

What do you expect? The game has the same character design as Soma Bringer and look how bad those designs were.

      • Aoshi00

Really? That explains it.. I played Soma Bringer and the chars’ look really put me off, that was nothing aesthetically pleasing about it :(…

    • MrMee

lol I think I’m the only one who isn’t bothered by the character designs. Mostly because they don’t look like cliched anime designs that make many JRPGs look like they were done by the same artist.

  • http://twitter.com/cocainexplosion Doctor_Rabbit

Art direction and graphics are different… it’s why certain older games have never lost their charm graphically, even though they’ve aged a lot. Hey, maybe the budget went somewhere else. Maybe we’ll have tons of well-acted VA work, or really good music. Maybe they’ll hire great writers.

Don’t dismiss the game because it doesn’t look shiny- there’s far more to a game than graphics. What if everything else turns out fantastic?

    Maybe I’m too optimistic.

    • lucy1986

      I agree.
I would be far more upset with a visually stunning, yet soulless game.

  • MrRobbyM

Graphics can be bumped up quite a bit but if this game lets me explore beautiful, giant areas and kill giant monsters, all that is forgiven.

  • Nekobo

It’s too bad Monolith is owned by Nintendo…I’d love to see what they could pull off on a PS360.

  • StealthKnight

This is a low quality video so it may look better in a high quality one. Also, This isn’t the final release so the characters graphics may improve. We should also remember that this games has giant landscapes and that can take a toll on how detailed the graphics maybe. Lets wait and see before we jump to conclusions

    • BK0000

I really doubt there’s time to change much. The game will probably be released in two or three months.

Edit: There’s definitely not enough time for them to improve the characters. Nintendo announced the Japanese release info at a retailer meeting:

      Xenoblade (Wii, Nintendo)
      - June 10th
      - 6,800 yen

  • Aoshi00

The environment looks nice, but the facial features on the characters look weird, the way how their eyes are spaced, or the shape of the nose.. Last Story day 1, this will have to see.. the last bit is interesting, they shot at the debris fallen from the gods..

    • Artavasdus

I don’t see how Last Story can be more appealing than Xenoblade when nothing has been shown so far aside from some artworks :P
I think it should be wise to wait actual in game footage before judging the technical level of Mistwalker’s last opus or comparing it to Xenoblade or other titles.

      • Aoshi00

I’m only basing my faith on his FF games, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and ASH which I had all enjoyed. Also the art of Last Story looks like it was either drawn by Minaba Hideo or the Drakengard char designer, so I know I would like the look at least. I wish they would reveal whether the gameplay is turn based or not. I would’ve anticipated it even more if it’s on PS3/360, but it’s on the Wii, so..

Well, looking at this footage, it just makes sense why they add Xeno- to the title… Art is a big part to me, when it comes to game or manga, I know I wouldn’t like Xenoblade’s battle system too much, and w/ characters looking like this now, definitely diminished my interest, which is still hanging by a thread because it is called Xeno-something.. also not sure if it’s this video out of sync, seems like FFX’s real time cutscenes (the Jpn ver) had better lip sync than this..

  • thebanditking

Am I the only one who things the characters eyes and faces look a little strange? Almost like the eyes are too big for their heads and some dont seem to have a nose, rather just a strange pertrusion from the middle of their face. FFXII had an odd look too but some of the characters here just looks odd kind of like fish.

    • midgard229

yeah seriously, what an ugly game, and i loved xenogears and all 3 xenosaga games, this game just looks horrible, even if its fun ugly characters make for a forgettable cast and ugly graphics just make it hurt to look at.

honestly, no EXCUSE that this game looks worse than xenosaga 1,2,3 when its same creators.

that and crisis core and birth by sleep look next gen compared to this and those r psp games!

  • masuto

I thought the Wii should have better graphics than PS2. Right now, it looks like Final Fantasy XII-2.
