Square Shatter Hopes For Final Fantasy V & VI On DS

In response to a Square Enix member inquiring about whether or not Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy VI were DS-bound, producer Shinji Hashimoto answered by way of Tweeting: “As for FF5 and 6, there are technical problems; presently these are also undecided.”


We wouldn’t take this to mean these games aren’t coming. The fact that “technical problems” exist indicates that they were, at some point, in production or pre-production. Although, whether “technical problems” refers to DS hardware limitations or is another way of saying, “We’re waiting for the next line of portables” is, of course, anyone’s guess.

      I would also like to see the FF6 with Crisis Core graphics. Crisis Core may not be a very good game, but it doesn’t matter how the game is. The graphics are extremely well done and FF6 already has its own solid gameplay engine.

        Um? Sorry I know Crisis Core was another FF7 throw-up…. But it had a wonderful story and game engine. (not to judge your comment or anything).
        ^-^ FF5-FF6 would look amazing if it was remade with Crisis Core style!!.. but kept the original battle style as well. Crisis Core was needed for FF7 past story… but we need to see FF5-6 in Next Gen graphics… rather than the old retro original/remakes had.

    Oh, I hope they make them eventually. And I’d prefer that they don’t bother with voice acting this time. I had no issues with FFIV’s voice work, but… I don’t think every game needs voice acting, especially not portable games.

    I hope this means they’re waiting for DS3D so that there can actually be more than 6 enemies per battle! I’ve waited long enough, I can wait a bit more…

    I’m cool with this. I didn’t really love FFIV DS as it was. The GBA version is still my favorite.

    So basically Square is saying that it can’t rehash the FF3DS game engine for a 3rd and 4th port remake.

    Personally I’m glad to hear this. The DS remakes looked-IMHO-absolutely awful, especially the character models. I don’t understand how Taito was able to put out a game like Estpolis with such detailed characters and yet the FF remakes were butchered.

      And I still would rather see a NEW FF game as opposed to another port. Why not make a Final Fantasy 6 spin-off? Or…Chrono 3??

        Have to agree. imo Square needs to stop pulling a George Lucas with their past classics and focus on making something new that can actually hold its own against them.

          Unless you have been living under a rock, you might have some idea that Square is obsessed with graphics. So it is hardly our fault when it releases a game that looks sub-par and people make note of it.

          As for the port issue, how exactly is wanting a new product “shallow”?

      • I would point to FFXIII, 4 Warriors of Light, Agito XIII, Versus XIII and Revenant Wings. It’s not like they’ve stopped making new FF games. I really don’t see the problem here. Personally, I like having portable versions of classics I missed out on because it makes them easily accessible to me. FFIV DS is one of the best portable RPGs I’ve played, too.

      yea, didn’t care much for the big head/pointy hands and feet for the 3D remake of IV either, though I liked the beefed up soundtrack. Guess it’s just laziness, Last Story is alrdy looking so much better than many Wii games (at least from those handful of screenshots we saw).

      Personally I still want an all out remake of VI & VII on PS3, like many said PS3 or bust. Yes, Chrono 3 too.

          So you need to be an actor or director in order to express your opinion of a movie, or you need to know how to draw in order to like or dislike a piece of art? Yes, I see some Wii games looking better than some, and developers not fully utilizing the hardware. Yes, a lot of companies are lazy, that’s why you have all these bug-ridden games being released in Japan.

            Saying something is good or bad as a piece of art is a value judgment, so yes, you’re perfectly free to have that opinion even if you haven’t worked on a movie, game, or painting yourself. However, that’s different than saying something is a product of laziness.

            Unless you have worked behind the scenes on such a project, and have seen first hand what results from lazy development, you can’t judge whether a bad product is the result of laziness, poor planning, or bad luck. You can say it’s a bad product, but you can’t really make any conclusions as to why it turned out that way.

            Well I don’t work for Square so I can only speculate just like we all do. For example, FFXIII turned out the way it did (why was so much important story content in a separate book instead of being in the main game which is accessible by everyone, I know it’s sold for 1400 yen), could only be attributed to poor design choice, budget constraint, or S-E’s “self complacency” (read laziness). Just because they spend all the time making the game look great, doesn’t mean that it’s not lacking in the other departments. And the game had a lot of flaws even in terms of graphics, what’s w/ blocking arms and chubby fingers, Xenosaga Episode II? Maybe they think the faces look nice enough so nobody would care about details like arms and hands? Or NMH Paradise’s port, nobody tested it or they just think people wouldn’t notice 45 sec loadtimes?

            Not to say I totally disliked FFXIII or don’t appreciate their effort in making such a game, personally I think it leaves a lot to be desired. You’re right, it could be due to any number of factors, but I would hate to believe that this is their limitation of their skills for making a HD game which is the standard right now. There shouldn’t be need for compromise, like graphics is good, the other things are secondary, etc. This is a FF title after all.

    They should just remake them for the PSP and then later on do the inevitable. Port or remake them once again. How many times has the original FF and FF2 been ported and remade? FF4 is reaching that status where FF5 and 6 have three games less than FF4 if you don’t count the multiple releases on SNES as different games.

    Final Fantasy VI is one of those titles I honestly don’t want to see in 3D…that is 3d used for IV remake. I’d rather see it in high rez 2d (but Yoshitaka Amano style!) or really good 3d.

    I remember when I used to play my PSX and Saturn, wished games would look on par with cartoons..not necessarily realistic but at the time, I felt looking cartoon was harder..or like a picture. Now several years later this has been realized! all the DBZ titles I wished was 3d but looked the part, do look so! the naruto games look amazing.

    How amazing would the game look if the entire world was build on Yoshitaka Amano style. I mean maybe some people are not his fans but the game itself would look def. diff and unique from any other game out there.

    • Totally agree. FFVI is an artistic masterpiece… 3D, especially DS 3D would be a waste.

      Interestingly, playing FFIX recently, I would say that it’s a low-res 3D masterpiece in the same way. It’s like watching the best puppet show ever.

    Although I want FFVI in PSP graphics or better, I was really hoping to play FFV on the DS remade. A shame.

  • Personally, I’m happy waiting for them to do it on the next line of portable systems. We’ve already got Agito XIII, Birth by Sleep, 4 Warriors of Light, 3rd Birthday and Dragon Quest IX to look forward to. I don’t think it’s unfair for them to want to hold off on these so they can get off to a good start with 3DS/PSP2/Whatever. If there’s one thing Square excel at, it’s putting out good portable games.

    • Totally agree. We waited, Advance in hand, for FFIII and it was delayed. We waited, Wonderswan Color in hand, and it was delayed again. As long as FFV/FFVI trends on the Famitsu most requested list Squenix will re-release it.

    Has there ever been a company that talks so much about what they can’t do? FF7 remake will take forever, HD towns are hard, too little demand for Chrono, difficult to tell a good story in an open world and now this. I’m not saying that they can do these things but they don’t need to talk about it.

    I do not ever want to see FF6 remade, unless they seriously remake it in a style that actually looks like Amano’s art, with a nice subdued color set like 6 actually had.

    HD 2D looks extremely cheap and far too glossy, especially for something like 6’s setting. Normal 3D would just end up losing all of the personality of the original sprites, especially if it’s regular DS 3D. And not only that but the music wouldn’t even be close to as good on the DS.
