Nier Demo In The Pipeline

By Spencer . May 14, 2010 . 1:23pm

imageNier has mixed reviews. Despite what reviewers had to say about the fetch quests (Nier, to some extent, is a Barbarian built errand boy), the story is interesting and drives the game.

Maybe people will feel differently about it if they play it? Square Enix thinks so because they’re developing a demo. Nier producer Yosuke Saito hopped on to Twitter to say he’s eating cold noodles and beginning work on an Xbox 360 demo. Saito also mentions “DLC” as another item in the works, but that shouldn’t be surprising since the first pack, The World of Recycled Vessel came out a few days ago.

    Hope they’ll do a PS3 demo too

  • masuto

I would like to try out the demo.

  • cowcow

Hmm a 360 demo huh…yeah guess their “Old caveman Nier approach” hasn’t quite won over the testostorone fueled XBox westerners as they hoped.

    • Hraesvelgr

      I appreciate your generalization.

      • cowcow

        Don’t do that

        • Hraesvelgr

          :(

    • BrotherCavil

And you yourself are yet to win over the intelligent crowd with your failed attempts at snide, spiteful remarks…

      • cowcow

        same to you buddy :P

        • Aoshi00

No offense. Many people like this game as it is, in both Jpn and the US (Jpn gamers like both Replicant and Gestalt). You’re not going to play this game just because it doesn’t have a pretty boy in it, wahwah… There are two things you can do, either stop crying and learn Japanese and import Replicant or enjoy the awesome game as it is. So why waste your breath bashing it? It only makes you sound immature putting down a game you’ve never played, and a good one at that, featuring one of the best stories, one of the best soundtrack ever. This game is grade A, we’re not getting some dumbed down ver. or anything, for all I know the father-daughter relationship works much better than brother and sister (done how many times now?) Honestly, playing as an older hero is refreshing, it’s hard for me to play games w/ teenage heroes anymore, maybe it’s because I’m not getting any younger. You think the Jpn developer making a wrong decision huh, if younger Nier were in this, people would bash yet another typical Jpn anime emo hero like Tidus or Raiden who they can’t tell if it’s a man or a woman. I thought they strike a right balance, at least old man Nier isn’t bald :)

          • cowcow

I guess my gripe is why make 2 versions. Its like they are embarrassed of their own work. They go through all that work and its not like Gestalt is selling loads more because of the character change. If anything the need to make a demo is proof that it didn’t matter

          • Aoshi00

I guess it’s to satisfy those who need a pretty boy as the main hero? Two versions are fine, I actually appreciate this kind of stuff, I usually get both the Jpn and US version for most RPGs, the two games have differences is all the better, it’s like at least I’m not buying the exact same product twice. I don’t think anybody’s ashamed of old man Nier, but you know some people are superficial.

This is good. Demos, free demos I mean, are the way to go. This way individuals don’t have to rely on highly personal reviews and can get a feel for the games for themselves. Gameplay videos help, but demos are so much better because you can actually see for yourself how the combat is handled. This would also entice me to try a game I usually wouldn’t and in the end possibly pick it up.

  • Kris

I’ll probably be getting this today, I hope it’s good!
If not, I hope someone on Goozex will like it!

    • Kris

Update! It’s pretty good so far, but I’m only a couple hours in. Jamieson Price is a perfect fit as Nier.

      • Aoshi00

I know, Nier’s voice is both cool and funny right? (I don’t know what other roles he has played in other anime or games). Compared to him younger Nier sounds like a.. wimp.. Everyone is very well cast, so are Weiss and Kaine. The script is excellent. I can’t believe I’m 80% w/ my side quests right now lol, I’m an errand boy.

        • Kris

Ever play BlazBlue? He’s the English voice of Iron Tager. He’s been in a lot more, so I’ll just link to wikipedia here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamieson_Price

          • Aoshi00

Thanks for the link. I did play a little bit of BlazBlue, but only w/ Jpn track on, I will need to switch to Eng. and hear him in that. Unfortunately I’m not very familiar w/ US VAs other than a few. I think the only other role I heard him in was Argo in Magna Carta 2, his deep voice is very cool indeed, he was funny in that one too (still haven’t finished it yet, on disc 2….) I just got Ending B tonight, just wow… the last game that made me shed tears was Lost Odyssey… and I was trying to remember the last time I genuinely feel for the FF chars, hadn’t happened since X.. I wonder what ending C & D would be like…

          • vrakanox

Probably more tears ;_;. Just make sure they’re mainly tears! Yeah this game is pretty dark. How did you get so far ahead of me. Man I need to catch up.

          • Aoshi00

Yea, the 2nd playthru leading up to ending B is quite emotional (wonder if ending C & D would be more screwy like Drakengard though)..That’s because it’s the only game I’m playing non-stop lol.. I want to stop but the story just sucks me in. I must say I’m a little tired to get the other 2 endings though, having done so much fetch quests (82%, told myself I would stop running errands but so addictive, and I want the fishing achievement) and thinking I’d need to re-play Replicant again. I couldn’t help but check out some Replicant gameplay videos on youtube, the Eng. voice acting/casting and script are definitely up a notch. I don’t know who did the localization, it’s a heck of a good job. And other than pretty boy Nier being better looking, I can’t see myself liking him more than the old man.I just stopped fighting and let those tears flow haha…

The demo is up on Jpn Live alrdy, around 500 Mb. I was going to d/l it yesterday just curious to see the Jpn translation. Then I experimented something, I just changed the system’s language setting to Jpn and started the game, voila, the game’s text and everything is in Jpn lol (so the American ver has both Eng. & Jpn). The translation is okay, didn’t really translate the graphic cuss words. The Jpn text is really tiny though, even smaller than the Eng. text which is a rarity. You got to get pretty close to the TV to read it and I have a 46″.I wonder who rated this game low, other than the sidequests which are totally optional, everything about this is a pure work of love, the attention to detail is amazing. Just started my 2nd playthru to get ending B now :) Some parts are so sad…The DLC is quite fun, I have unlocked some weapons and two sets of costumes for the gang so far, the Kabuki and Samurai, adds a little variety visually for the replays :)

I wonder which part they’re putting on the demo, most likely the snowy scene at the beginning we see in the trailers. I think the mysterious and haunting atmosphere should make many want to play the actual game.

Ah, thanks Aoshi… I should update this! I took my 360 offline since I’ve been playing Alan Wake hahaha.

      • Aoshi00

No prob, the demo is for everyone (not like for gold members for a week). Envy you playing Alan Wake alrdy, heard Remedy pulled it off and didn’t disappoint, can’t wait. You done w/ Peace Walker yet? I really need to get used to the control..

        • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

Alan Wake is fantastic and you’ll be hearing about it soon. :) It kind of pulled me away from Nier and Peace Walker. The aiming for Peace Walker still is difficult. Do you use the D-pad? So far I’ve liked that the best.

          • Aoshi00

That’s good to hear. Yea, the default using face buttons to move the camera is really screwing me up on aiming or simply moving around, can’t help but think this should be on console to be played on TV, the team management from Portable ops isn’t really to my liking either. I just got to the first boss mission but haven’t started yet, I heard the boss fights could be very hard unless you play w/ friends together, so that’s kind of discouraging.. I might need to try the d-pad like you suggested. So did Famitsu take money again or not for the 40/40 lol..

Nier was so good though, nowadays I almost always can’t finish any game, I did a lot of sidequests too, even some could be tedious fetch quests, but Weiss made fun of Nier of being an errand boy meddling in other people’s business :) so me finishing it in a little over a week is saying something (FFXIII took 3 months on and off..)

Look forward to your Alan Wake write up.

          • BrotherCavil

Heh.. I’ve gotten used to Peace Walker’s controls. XD

In fact, now I can’t even play Portable Ops proper.

  • vrakanox

I’m just glad that they are putting so much into it. I hope this demo works out. I’d love to see more of Nier in the future. It’s GOTY for me still and I hope they crank out some more DLC. I’m about right where you are Aoshi00 I started the game over after ending A then I’m going to beat it and get all the weapons. I’m going to get all the endings.

Yeah you guys are starting to get me hyped for Alan Wake. I love creepy games so I know it’ll satisfy my hunger in that area. But I already know there is no way the character Alan Wake can top Nier in my heart :3

  • http://twitter.com/frozenbabylon J.Jones

Well, That didn’t take long at all! Just log into your japanese account and download the japanese demo. Log back into your normal account to play and it’ll all be in english except for Nier’s name. I mean literally, everything is in english. Instructions, Items, Dialog, everything.

It even comes up with a ESRB M rating instead of a Cero mark. Nice!

  • Extra_Life

I just picked the game and I’m really enjoying it, and have been telling several friends that they should play it but they seem reluctant to make the purchase, hopefully the demo actually will push them in right direction! It’s a great, memorable game.

    • Aoshi00

This is really one amazing game and somewhat underrated, I hope some good word of mouth and demo would help people see how good this game is too. You think the game was awesome finishing it once, go at it the 2nd time for Ending B (which is what I’m doing now), the amount of effort went into this game is just mind boggling, FFXIII seems like a joke in comparison, in almost every aspect except graphics (everyone said FFXIII was a good game, can anyone honestly say they would play that game more than once?). Even then Nier still looks 10x more artistic than FFXIII. I have not stopped playing this baby in 2 weeks, night after night after I came home from work.

  • dionela

This game is so addictive… 45 hours playing and counting… im at the “part 2″.
Nier it’s really brilliant- I wish more games like this would be developed… wait, no, if that I wouldn’t have enough time to play them

It’s really so far the best game I have played this year. I don’t get why the low score on most reviews, it makes no sense. This game is brilliant, BOTH on 360 and PS3; the graphics are like… I dont’ know, Uncharted 1? , no, they are better. The maps are awesome, the cities, the dungeons…

It is sad FFXIII sold so well while this game is better. (except for the graphics yeah yeah, they are average, NOT bad)

    • vrakanox

It’s games like this that transcend the mediums of storytelling that will bring the gaming industry to new heights. I’ve been personally trying to get as many people as I can to try this game out. It might take a sequel with FFXIII like graphics to get the gaming majority into it though.
