Kingdom Hearts Re:coded Confirmed For Nintendo DS [Update]

By Spencer . June 9, 2010 . 9:44am

imageSquare Enix and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days developer h.a.n.d. are working on a new Kingdom Hearts game. It’s not Kingdom Hearts III. It’s Kingdom Hearts Re:coded.

The game popped up in Square Enix’s E3 lineup. Here’s what Square Enix has to say about it.

Sora’s journey in Kingdom Hearts II has drawn to a close, and now a new tale is set to begin. Jiminy Cricket is looking over the journal he used to document his first adventure with Sora when he discovers a mysterious message. He didn’t write it – so how on earth did it get there? King Mickey is determined to find out, so he and his friends decide to digitize the journal and delve into its deepest secrets. Inside this “datascape” dwells a second Sora who is about to embark on a grand adventure of his very own.

Kingdom Hearts:coded, a mobile phone game (pictured below), also takes place after Kingdom Hearts II and involves Jiminy Cricket’s journal. Kingdom Hearts Re:coded appears to be a Nintendo DS remix.

    …..Booooooo. Do not want.

  • BrotherCavil

Where *is* the SE E3 page anyhow? Could be I just forgot how to get to it, or they took it down.

  • Cloud_ST

    Maaaaan,I was hoping for a DS/PSP release…

    • BrotherCavil

      =_= It IS a DS release….

      • Cloud_ST

Yeah but no PSP,that’s what I’m saying.

        • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

wouldn’t that sentence be “maaaaan, I was hoping for it to be on psp along with the ds” or something along those lines. Other than that you shouldn’t be so excited for recoded as its just a series of puzzle which you obviously need to be complete. Story wise, it the closest thing you know about that letter at the end of Kingdom Hearts 2. Nice that its finally coming to a console. If I’m right this is just exactly the same as the mobile kingdom hearts coded right?

          • Cloud_ST

Lol,I guess, but since 3rd Birthday was announced on phones first and then for the PSP I had some hope,I guess this goes to my “when I get a DS” list.

          • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

coded was actually RELEASED for the mobile in god knows how many episode unlike XIII agito and 3rd birthday. Coded was made out of damn sprites (if i remember correctly) so it would take more than effort to renovate everything in the game to get as close to what psp user expect. Get yourself a phat ds and make yourself happy by buying your wish list. I yet to buy 95% of my wish list after buying a DSI XL.

I believe Sony platforms will continue to be where the “main” Kingdom Hearts games are published for the foreseeable future. Look at Birth by Sleep. It was treated like it was “KH3″ from day one. There’s also another Kingdom Hearts game in development alongside Re:Coded, which I’m pretty sure will land on PSP as well.

358/2, while fantastic, was still treated very much like a spin-off. Re:Coded will be the same.

Now, the question is, where will KH3 eventually land? With a little common sense, we all know what the best publishing strategy for it would be. But obviously, in this case, it’s hard to say which way they’ll go.

  • Kuza21

Yet another kingdom Heartss FAIL. I used to love the series so much when it first released.

  • http://twitter.com/VietKnight Alexander Le

Well another KH DS copy I wonder if there is something special going to release with it.

  • cowcow

It was so obvious it was going to be this for the DS. Really worthless though. At this point just waiting for the other two FF XIII titles and Parasite Eve

  • pacanug

I was actually expecting the game to be on the iPhone. Proper sequel plz.

  • jarrodand

    Ew.

If SE really wants to pursue mobile ports, they should do stuff like the remakes of Dragon Quest 1-3, Final Fantasy 1-2, Seiken Densetsu 1-2, etc on DSiWare.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

It’s kind of surprising they haven’t ported Before Crisis yet.

      • jarrodand

Also surprising that FFIV: The After Years didn’t go DSiWare yet. Honestly though, the general lack of Japanese mobile ports to DSiWare is kind of baffling imo.

      • BrotherCavil

Shocking, actually. I’d gobble it up post-haste.

      • lostinblue

They really should, before NDS lifecycle ends and they don’t have any other suitable “living” platform to release it on.

Well, they could always make do on wiiware or some downloadable service like they did with FF4 the after years but… it always seemed to be more at home on a portable 2D-driven platform I guess.

      • http://modorenai.livejournal.com/ modorenai

Agreed. I was expecting that they would release Before Crisis on the NDSi, since it has a camera that would be just perfect for the materia system, so it’s a mystery to me why they haven’t done so yet, especially since the game is sure to make tons of money considering the NDSi’s audience base and the fact that anything with the FFVII name on it is a money milker maker.

  • DemonicX

Still trying to figure out if I want to buy this or not.
It doesn’t seem like it’ll be any fun.

    • BrotherCavil

      Watch the youtube vids.

      XD It ain’t.

  • kylehyde

As a proud DS user I have to say: “good news to me.”

  • P4ine

Seriously Nomura, SCREW YOU. A greedy, money-voracious jerk you are. Why not release the game for a suitable platform to begin with? Jeez.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

All right, that’s enough. I understand you may not be happy with the platform or the game, but there’s no reason to curse. That doesn’t really add to the discussion at all.

      • BrotherCavil

Ishaan, stop fanboying. He didn’t curse anywhere, and it’s fairly obvious that you’re just butthurt over the recent backlash.Don’t mean to be a prick or anything, but comon, be easy. People are allowed to have opinions, as well as express anger if they wish. The moment that our right to an opinion or disdain is LEGALLY stripped from us, you may feel free to contact my filthy assistant, and tell her.So that way, she can continue to ignore me and everyone else associated with me while she files her filthy assistant nails. >:< The parasite.

        • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

In general, we’d appreciate if commenters would vent in a civilized manner rather than react to any announcement with overemotional namecalling.

I mean it’s hard to have a discussion with “screw you”. What do you say back? A better response could be, “I don’t like this because…” then someone can say “I agree and this is what I’d rather see” or “I disagree because…”

I realize the Internet is the “wild west” when it comes to opinions, but comments are for discussing. There’s really no discussion here.

          • BrotherCavil

Spencer, I’ve said much worse things – at which points, people en masse agreed with me on occasions. You and Ishaan included, even. That said, I just don’t want to see anyone getting banned for having an opinion differing from a staff member. If this is an issue of civility, then it’s fair to say, you *should* have a bone to pick with me more so than anyone else.

Let’s leave Random Guy #47 alone.

          • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

Well you were banned before, but everyone deserves a second chance. This is why I chose not to reflect on your or any other “returning” commenter’s past history.

Just to be clear, I was speaking generally. That wasn’t a jab at random guy #47 or whatever, just my personal view of why we have comments and such.

Civility allows me and the rest of the staff to open up fan powered Q&As and such. Once civility is gone those things will sadly have to go too. And I truly believe, at least here and now, there ratio of good and great commenters outweigh the proverbial bad apples. I’d like to keep it that way so when it comes time for me to say – “hey readers, tell me what you want to know” I’ll get meaningful answers.

Anyway… back on topic Kingdom Hearts Re:coded.

      • Kris

That reminds me, I need to be more careful with my language around here. XD

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Pffft. You’re totally in the clear and you know it. :P

Cursing is a-OK if it’s funny or somehow adds to the discussion (which it usually doesn’t…). :)

      • P4ine

        Aye aye, sir

    • lostinblue

Can I ask what’s wrong with DS?

is the console with the biggest install base right now… unsuitable? why?

I doubt this has anything to do with a Nomura decision too.

      • P4ine

Nooo, DS is okay, and that’s what I was talking about: Why didn’t they release coded for NDS from the get-go?
Mobile Phone sure WAS unsuitable, yes.

        • lostinblue

          Ah, ok.

To be honest though, as “unsuitable” outside japan as it was, I look at it as perfectly passable game. they’re just covering kh2 events all over again right? in a lesser form.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/xxHiryuuxx Hiryuu

LET’S REPLAY THE EVENTS IN KH! AGAIN! JUST IN CASE WE MISSED SOMETHING!

Ah, I see. Milk competition. Have to be in competition against the almighty FF. Good show, Squeenix. Good show.

    • BrotherCavil

Now all we need is for a Data Roxas to relive SORA’s adventure! Again! So we can meet even MORE clo- er, “plot points!”

    • ShinNoKami

XD This. I’m SO agreeing with this.

Yes, let’s totally compete with our own franchise… we’re TOTALLY not supposed to be a spinoff game anyway. That’s not Cloud/Squall/Aerith/Yuffie/Tidus… THEY JUST LOOK LIKE THEM!

  • holyPaladin

    Ah for DS..
Haven’t finished 358/2 but finished BBS..

I’m little graphic whore but 358/2 just don’t look good in my eyes.. They should make it 2D

    • BrotherCavil

Honestly…yes. Making the game sprite-based would’ve given them SOOOO much more room for game system exploration – ala WEWY.You know, so you don’t mash the same button over and over and over, on the same enemies over and over and over, in the same areas over and over and over.

  • masuto

I don’t want to replay the game again.
