Natal’s Final Name Is “Kinect”, New Games Revealed

By Ishaan . June 13, 2010 . 5:40pm

“Kinect.” That’s what Microsoft have settled on as the final name of what we’ve known for a year as Project Natal. The motion-sensing camera is scheduled to be shown off at a locked-down press event at the University of Southern California, with a performance by Canada-based entertainers, Cirque Du Soleil, tailor-made for the device, today.

Prior to the event the event, USA Today have the scoop on some of the new software built around Kinect.

Kinectimals lets you train and play with 20 different virtual cats, including a lion, cheetah and tiger.

Joyride, a racing game, lets players use their hands to hold an imaginary steering wheel — pull your hands toward you and push back out for an acceleration boost — and their bodies to execute jumps and tricks.

Kinect Sports has six activities including boxing, bowling, beach volleyball, track and field, soccer and table tennis. To serve a volleyball, you mimic the real motion; in soccer, you can kick the ball or do a header.

Kinect Adventures includes a river-raft time trial and obstacle course, playable by up to four players. On the raft, playing as a duo, you and a partner must lean one way or another to steer. Jumping helps the raft reach special areas for extra points.

Dance Central, in development by MTV Games, brings a So You Think You Can Dance experience home.

Star Wars characters and iconic Disney favorites will be featured in separate new games being developed at Microsoft in conjunction with LucasArts and Disney.

As of this post, a price point and release date have not been announced for the Kinect.

rar, I figure you guys caught the mysterious remodeled 360 picture kicking around? No confirmation yet though, but probably won’t be til tomorrow at Microsoft’s show. Also it’s suppose to have built in wifi, 250GB drive, and “Kinect”.…rar I do not approve of these angles, there defying time and space! Also it’s encouraging me to sit my system upright T_T’ do not like.

    • Haha, I was just putting that up! Thanks though. :D

      • Code

hooray! I totally helped or something >w<!

So this is the real deal huh, doesn’t seem to be too slimmed down (if it has Natal, or Kinect, in it), or I guess the old PS3 was just too huge to begin w/.. Actually I make all my systems stand upright (Fat PS3/Slim, Jpn/US 360, black/wht Wii), because most of the 360 faceplates are vertical too :).. If I could transfer the data from my old system to this one, I might get this and give the old one to my sis, she still hasn’t finished Lost Odyssey..Love the name Kinectimals, “Nobody f*#&s with a lion” lol

      • Kinectimals gives me the impression there’s more than one type of animal, and I’m disappointed that there isn’t. What the article describes sounds more like Kinecticats… , it sounds more appropriate in my crazy cat lady head.

  • andref

at least from the descriptions not all of them sound like shovelware

  • cowcow

Where’s the most obvious game….a boxing or kickboxing simulator Kinectikick?

Wow. I was waiting to pass judgment on the Natal until some stuff was announced for it. I thought they might do something real cool with it. But instead it gets a new, crappy name and gets nintendogs, mariokart, wii sports, wii resort, and just dance. There’s nothing even slightly original. Paint me a cynic, but I’m disappointed. Joyride sounded cool last year, now it sounds borderline unplayable with it’s control scheme.

Even that I agree with you in most of your comment, mario kart is not a crap.

      • SeventhEvening

Oh, sorry, I don’t mean to imply there is anything wrong with Mariokart or wii sports, but it’s just kind of been done. We also got Sonic and Sega All-stars racing a short time ago, which was a Mariokart rip-off itself (I forgave it because I’ve always like Sega’s characters).

Although…I’m not a fan of trying to use the wheel in Mariokart Wii, but then again, the game doesn’t make me.

        • kylehyde

I understand, in fact I see your point.

  • Hraesvelgr

    Wh… Kinect… Kinectimals… What is this, I don’t even…

  • kupomogli

I was once interested in Natal and thought it actually was going to be pretty good. After watching the videos and the fact that it just looks like crap, I can say that there’s only two systems that’s decent with motion controls, even though it’s not worth bothering with motion controls to begin with.

  • I just feel like face palming. I love all the systems and the various gaming I get from them, but I clearly remember the Wii getting laughed at for all it’s gadgety-gimmicky gaming.. and then read this lineup and think, “Et tu, Brute?”
