Nomura Open To Developing The World Ends With You Sequel

The World Ends With You was an unexpected breakout hit for Square Enix. It was an entirely new franchise and it was certainly not the kind of game Kingdom Hearts creator, Tetsuya Nomura, is known for designing. Since its release, Square fans have been asking for a follow-up game.

It would appear Nomura is keen on developing a follow-up as well.

“I’m really happy that the game was so well received in North America,” Nomura told Nintendo Power in a recent interview with the magazine. “I definitely want to make a sequel. I’m very busy working on other titles right now, but when the time is right, I would love to make another installment of The World Ends with You.”

A World Ends With You sequel on the 3DS might be interesting. What ideas can you think of that would benefit from the new system?

  • Well then you know what to do. When you release the game make sure the US is the first to get it.

Actually I don’t have idea on how a TWEWY could or would work on 3DS, but one thing is sure and is: “I want my TWEWY sequel now, pronto, maintenant”.Seriously just give us that to the fans and we will be very happy.

    • MizuMikomi

I couldn’t agree with you more!

TWEWY was so well done, and I consider it to be one of the most enjoyable, and entertaining DS games to be released thus far.

    • super 3D pin battles :D

    • Joanna

      My thoughts exactly!
I can wait though, as long as we get as good of a game.

  • karasuKumo

I liked this game :D Pretty original.

    • brooklyngamer86

I couldn’t agree with ya more.

  • You know I wanted to know something for some time. Why did TWEWY failed in Japan?

    • It didn’t. Last recorded number on Enterbrain tracker is close to 200k, which is great for new I.P. :)

      • ohh ok then I was just reading a few articles how TWEWY so much better in the US while it failed in Japan. I guessed wrong then.

        • Don’t worry about it! The game was very well-received in the U.S., critically, but it’s hard to compare that to Japan because, really, how many people went and looked up all the different Japanese media outlets that reviewed it? :)

      • malek86

I don’t know if that can be called successful. if it were, I’m sure Squenix would have made a sequel far sooner. Besides, weren’t people always saying that the game underperformed? What were they talking about then?

        • It’s just a question of priorities, I’m sure. Nomura’s already involved with a bunch of higher-profile portable projects (the KH games), which are from an established brand and guaranteed to sell more. I think 200k is fantastic for a DS game.

        • Pichi

I think the problem from what I read about on sales is that the game was overshipped and was sort of a bomba in Japan for awhile. Sure, it sold the initial shipment overtime, but is it still considered a success? I think so in the long run. Well, at least hopefully in SE’s eyes.

  • I’m not sure about the 3DS part, since what I loved about TWEWY was the 2D graphics style.

    As for story, I’d probably be better to use new main characters, but Minamimoto ;____;

  • Nyron

Ugh. You know what’d be great? If SE developed more great original titles like TWEWY instead of milking and ruining everything they have.

    • No, TWEWY, deserves to be milked, you can say that if this games gets a 4th sequel, if a game is good, i think you can milk it up to 3 times, but that depends in how it goes for the 2nd time

  • It’s criminal that this game hasn’t been featured at any game concerts. :(

  • yes… YES…YES!!!!! MOMMY!! YES!!! YES!!!

  • SanityCrisis

I thought the game wrapped itself up pretty nicely and didn’t really make itself open to a sequel. That being said, I wouldn’t mind another game if they can pull it off. It’d be kind of neat if we could get to know a little more about the Reapers… so a prequel perhaps?

Though I’d like to see more original games from SE.
TWEWY was great, but I don’t want to see it milked to death. I want that same sense of playing something new and original I had when I played TWEWY for the first time.

  • DemonicX

Well this is definitely nice information.

Before, I was hoping to have it on the Wii, but that would definitely ruin the magnificent way it plays, and so the DS is no doubt, the best console/handheld to have it on again. I look forward to hearing more news on this sequel.

  • OneOkami

I have fond memories playing this game. The battles, the art and ESPECIALLY the music are some of my most memorable on the DS and beyond. Though the 2D aspect underneath the art style really helped make this game feel unique and special, it’d be interesting to see what kind of 3D effects could be used, especially in battle.

  • Alrai

I’m not sure how I feel about this. I mean, on one hand, TWEWY’s an excellent game.

On the other hand, the ending did tie things up rather well and I’m not sure there’s a ton of room to work in when it comes to a direct sequel. And…and I know milage varies…I’ve not been a fan of Squeenix’s recent attempts at direct sequels to games. New characters might fix it, I guess…

    • what if they make a prequel since the reapers were still holding games before that

      • Alrai

That could work. Or having Neku deal with the angels next. I guess I’m just…cautiously optimistic, because there’s a lot that could go wrong.

  • fisico

As long as they don’t choose crappy 3D graphics i’m in.

  • ShinNoKami

He’s gonna turn this game into another Kingdom Hearts, I’m sure. ><

  • satchidananda

I’m actually playing through the original right now, and just approaching the end (I think).

It’s atonishingly good – it’s script, battle system, and production in general… all excellent. It manages to cut out so much of the tedium usually associated with the genre, with the adjustable difficulty settings, unique levelling mechanics, and non-random battles. Everything is totally streamlined – even chatting to NPCs.

  • TWEWY is the best DS game ever.EVER!

  • …i wonder if some of the locations will be updated? (many of the shops in game were based on real stores. many of these stores have closed up or changed)
