Clever Siliconera readers recognized the main character of Catherine because he’s in Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable! The female protagonist runs into Vincent who mentions his “problems”, more specifically nightmares.

Vincent, a 32 year old salaryman lacking ambition, is charmed by Catherine, a 22 year old mysterious beauty. At night, Vincent is plagued by nightmares where he climbs a never ending staircase. He can wake up if he reaches the top, but it appears there is a connection between the dream world and the real world.

There’s a rumor that if you fall in the dream you die in real life. The same page shows a screenshot with a newscaster reporting on the death of a young man. This screenshot has English text that with Japanese subtitles on top. In an interview with Famitsu, character artist Shigenori Soejima says the game raw terror and some scenes are intended to startle adults.

Catherine, according to a fold out poster of the girl eating a pizza, is coming to Xbox 360 and PlayStation in “2010 winter.” The official website is:

Thanks for pointing out the connection SpaceDrake and Pesmerga00.

How on earth can anyone reach the top of a “never-ending” staircase?

    • Good question, isn’t it?

    • That’s kind of the point, lol. It’s like the guy chasing after a white light in a dream which seems to always stay the same distance no matter how far he seems to run. Eventually, he will reach the light.

A certain condition must be met first though. Same situation here. You meet the condition, then the never-ending staircase turns into a normal set of stairs which you can actually reach the top of.

Until then, enjoy your stay in Hell, lol. Oddly enough, I used to have a reoccurring dream which involved going up a never-ending staircase as well a few years ago.

“Oddly enough, I used to have a reoccurring dream which involved going up a never-ending staircase as well a few years ago.”

Well in that case, when the game comes out, I guess I could ask you for a walkthrough.

        • Sorry. I never cleared the area. I just stopped playing, so I wouldn’t be able to help you :/

          • dusk

Never cleared the area? Riiighht~~~ Then how did you wake up alive? You just wanna keep Catherine to yourself, right? But I understand your feelings. Very, very well. Especially after seeing the pictures below.

Btw, doesn’t this remind anyone of Tarturus?

          • Oh wow. The cleavage shot I could have shrugged off, but that pizza page really makes this seem like any sexual content in this game is going to be bog-standard titillation aimed at manchildren rather than an interesting exploration of adult sexuality.

I haven’t lost all hope because it’s Atlus, but I expect to be let down. Pity, I was getting a Satoshi Kon vibe from the earlier scan.

          • it reminds me of “i want a localization”

@honorless Well, most of SMT games have some sex innuendo, for example… the first full moon for persona 3, and etc, in both persona 3 and 4, so this just suits them

          • kylehyde

Atlus+Pizza+hot chick= Epic win and I want localization now.

  • Yay, shoutouts.

What I find really interesting is that this, evidently, takes place in the Persona universe. That raises all sorts of questions about the nightmares and whatnot. I really can’t wait to find out more about this.

    • Jaxx-Leviathan

Hm, unless there’s official backing on the case whether these games share the same world, there is no proof they do. Since it’s the same team behind both P3P and Catherine they just have the freedom to put Vincent into both games, him being in P3P is probably just in the form of a clever cameo and interest-sparker for the coming Catherine game.

      • Zeik56

Exactly. Cameos are nothing new for Atlus, it doesn’t mean they share the same timeline. Trauma Center and Etrian Odyssey certainly don’t share the same timeline.

    • Pretty sure the female protagonist’s storyline is non-canon, so Vincent existing in the Persona universe probably is too, unfortunately.

  • Uhhh..I tried accessing the, “official site”, but I got some weird message.

“This page is used to test the proper operation of the Apache HTTP server after it has been installed. If you can read this page it means that the Apache HTTP server installed at this site is working properly.”

Can anybody else access it at the moment?

    • That’s because the site isn’t live yet. The same thing happened with Devil Survivor and other Atlus games announced in Famitsu.

      • Ohhh..okay, lol. Well, that explains it then. Also, check the tip box soon.

I’ll be sending some more stuff for this momentarily (including scans and more info) :)

  • malek86

I’ve been looking at some scans, and it looks a bit like Leisure Suits Larry with horror themes. Can’t say I’m particularly excited.

  • puchinri

So I notice, in P3P he has a mole. But in the Catherine screens and art, he doesn’t. So was that just experimenting? Easter egg? Or just something that got changed along the way?

I was liking the mole too.
He probably would have convinced me to get the game more if he had a social link.

  • I wanted Persona 5 :(

    • Ren

Meguro said to ask next year.

  • SupaPhly

wow, i never would have thought that a guy you meet in that club is main character in their next game

he did seem more mysterious when you can see his portrait picture later in the game

  • Code

rarr, what an interesting twist that this game would feature a character from Persona 3, very clever Atlus >w< You have intrigued me~! It might not be Persona 5, but this still seems potentially very interesting too!

  • cmurph666

Hopefully, Its out soon in NA.

    • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Please, allow me: “Hopefully, it’s out of Japan soon.”

      Sorry. Thanks. Sorry.

  • Ren

Hmm, Cero C and decent character models and anime cutscenes… I’ll be needing a PS3 soon.

  • Catherine also being released for the 360 is just an underlying term that its going to be localized..
