Super Robot Wars L Debut Trailer

By Ishaan . September 1, 2010 . 9:16am

Namco Bandai’s debut trailer for Super Robot Wars L doesn’t waste time on exposition or narrative or even any sort of story setup. It dives straight into giving you a rapid fire look at all the different series and mechs in the game.

Keep in mind, L is one of two announced portable Super Robot Wars titles. Namco’s other game is for the Nintendo 3DS and we know next to nothing about it as of now.

Nice, but still waiting to see the new mechanics for this, if any.

Oh, wow. It looks like they’ve improved the animations *a bit*.
I doubt much else has changed. Consider my interest revo-

This game already had me sold before even this trailer came out, but I think this one just stole my wallet…

Wow, somehow Shinji and Eva 1 looks kinda out of place IMO. But looks awesome, I am interested.

As always, the animations are superb and anime cut-ins blend seemlessly. It’s actually kind of sad, when you think about it. This could very well be the last SRW game done in pure 2D style, since all the hardware after this will become so advance that the SRW team will completely switch to 2D with 3D effects and cut-ins. Oh well, at least it’s going out with a bang.

But the animations weren’t the thing that worries me. Personally, I am far more concerned whether or not they will stick to their idiotic handheld “tradition” of excluding Battle Masteries and replayability features (such as EX mode, selectable protagonists, transfering funds etc.). It’s kind of sad that the OG games continue to represent the pinnacle of handhelds SRW’s simply beacuse they included features that console SRW’s had and that the handheld SRW’s always should have had….and this was back on Game Boy Advance. -_-

See, I like the idiotic handheld *tradition* of excluding Battle Masteries and EX Mode. To be honest, EX Mode doesn’t bother me as much since it basically means ‘play this limited-upgraded system where enemies get more annoying to unlock this special mode where the limit on your upgrades get raised’. I would welcome Battle Masteries more if they were truly optional, actually interesting and gave you only token bonuses like small PP gain. However, they usually tie into secrets, which means I generally cannot ignore them. Further more, they usually go down to ‘clear the map in X turns’, which is not anything I consider worthwhile having around.

Carryover of war funds has always been in since D, and I believe R had you retain upgrades, so I don’t see why this was even mentioned. I will agree that I do want selectable protagonists again. That being said, I was fine with Alpha Gaiden, OG2 and OGG for no selectable protagonist AND mech, and MX for only selectable mech, so this is more of something I’d like to see again rather than a must have. What I consider more essential to replayability is an implementation of the console-type PP system for buying abilities and upgrading stats instead of the usual PP to boost stats and some skill part to teach skills to characters.

I am more interested in story and how each series come together. Thus, I play W quite often and not so much K.

L’s setting is similar to K. I just hope they could get everything fit together this time (instead of constantly jumping from place to place and having series appear with no good reason).

  • wharcraff

Soo cool to see Goddanar in this. Would have lost my $#!t if they had Shin Getter Zero in this. Like that mech series.

    • Kibbitz

Which one is Shin Getter Zero?

  • RX79V

The animation Dancouga Nova is just impressive. Even my sister (who is not very interested in robot related stuff) asked if that is actual game footage.

Now if I could only find a place to preorder this.

    • Kibbitz

      Play-Asia? NCSX?

      • RX79V

I did not find the game under preorder page on PA.

Just found it on NCSX so I will get it there.

        • Kibbitz

It’s SRT, so it will definitely appear on PA. Not sure what’s the hold up. Still, at least you’re set with NCSX.
