Wow, Disgaea 4’s Graphics Are An Improvement

By Spencer . October 6, 2010 . 1:02pm

Disgaea 4 replaces the old Disgaea sprites with high resolution ones. In case you don’t remember, here’s what Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice looks like.

And this is Disgaea 4.

For the sake of nostalgia, players can toggle between classic and high definition visuals. Nippon Ichi shared these side-by-side sprite comparisons to illustrate the change. Prinnies look so smooth in Disgaea 4.

Remember the Magichange system where monsters could turn into weapons? Disgaea 4 has that and a monster-change system where monsters can transform into giant monsters.

  • AWESOME! And people were like they couldnt tell that the graphics had improved! Woe be to them and their eyesight!

Anyway, This will be the greatest RPG of 2011 for me!!!! I cant wait to sink in more than 180+ hours into the game. Giant monsters may actually make me more intrigued to use monsters more!

    • Code

Really people have said that? It should have been pretty damn easy to see. It looks like it’s going to be a blast, a lot of different little systems in this one from the looks of it. Admittedly my favorite part of the game is the giant weapons >w<~!

      • A lot of people I suspect have only been watching default/low quality trailers. The best one I’ve seen that loads well has been on YouTube. :<

I'm so happy that NIS is giving the option for the older sprites– there's just something so charming about them.

  • Code

rar, maan can’t wait for Disgaea 4 >ww>~!

  • Disgaea 4 is so much better looking!!
heads gonna roll if i dont get this game :3

  • Ereek

Ah, Cleric is looking more elegant than ever. She’s always been my favorite (visually) class.

    • Heh lol. Yeah, I always end up having her initially in the game. I think my favorite visually is the Masked Hero class.

  • cmurph666

    Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh! *Drool*

    • What a fitting avatar for that comment! lol

    • Vic, keep it together, Vic. You…awwwww…all over my SlayStation Portable.

  • man i cant w8 for this

  • Just wait until they start talking about the other improved stuff!!

    • Kris

Argh! You are like a living hype-building machine! :D

      • Built to specifications!

    • Stop existing, Nick! We all have irrational love for you!

  • Wow, the sprites look beautiful!
Not sure whether I will be getting this or not yet, but the game sure looks great.

  • joesz

wow….I like the new graphics modification, but there’s something more important then that..
    i’ts lelouch vi dracula!

    • nyoron

Are you just going by his looks or is Jun Fukuyama really doing his voice?

      • joesz

looks, way of talking and probably fukuyama jun is his seiyuu.. well its not confirmed but that’s what I see when I read his screen shot talking with that white haired guy..

But again, we are talking about nippon ichi here, they could choice luffy’s seiyuu for him if they want to.

        • nyoron

Looks like it’s actually Tatsuhisa Suzuki, who I’m not really familiar with (though he was Levin in Soul Nomad). Oh well!

  • i wonder why disgaea 3 didn’t have HD sprite…can’t be bothered to search if such topic exist.

    • NeoTechni

Yeah, It’d be nice if they’d patch D3 to use them

      • Zeik56

That’s not something you can really just patch into the game…

        • Jellybit

Since they’re just textures mapped onto polygons, it actually is something they could patch in. But they won’t since the higher resolution art is what will sell part 4. There’s no reason to get rid of their biggest selling point by retroactively putting it in the prequel. It’s a strange question to ask in fact. People don’t usually ask such a thing when a sequel is announced unless they feel the sequel’s not worth making.

          • Code

I think yeahh it could technically be patched in, but then you are also almost getting into the game being more on the HDD then even on the disc. But yeah to invest even more time, money and resources into a game that is 2 years old, probably isn’t going to happen.

          • Zeik56

What I mean is that implementing the hi-res art takes more than just putting it into the game. D3 is not programmed to run with that level of detail. It already has some slowdown on the heavily populated levels, throwing in hi-res HD graphics would make it so much worse.

          • Just remember you’re talking about sprite which are sequence of images and could barely or probably not effect the frame rate of any 3d polygons.

          • NeoTechni

They could sell a texture upgrade pack

          • Jellybit

Yeah, but the thing is, they’re trying to sell a full priced game on the merit of this new art. A texture upgrade pack would severely take away from the major selling point of the sequel for a good deal less money. It was worth it to them to go through all that work for a whole new full priced game, but probably not so much if they were to sell a visual upgrade digital download instead.

        • NeoTechni

          Textures? It’s easy as hell!

    • Code

I figure chances are the project began it’s production cycle as a PS2 title before it was later jumped up to the PS3 towards the end of it’s cycle. Likely by the time it was apparent that HD sprites was the way 2D was going on this generation’s systems, it was likely too late, and to costly for NIS to start redoing Disgaea 3 in HD. But notable, right afterward Disgaea 3, “Prinny: Can I really be the Hero” did have higher resolution sprites, so chances are it was something NIS investigated resources into immediately after Disgaea 3.

  • But do the counters run more than ten digits?

  • I am again excited for disgaea. I hope they have a better corner view of the sprite.

  • Zeik56

I wonder what’s up with those pics with the flat grids. Large scale war battle maybe please?

  • nyoron

I like how they had to add pasties to the Alraune class.

  • I can’t imagine the kind of person that would want this. I thought the unanimous consensus on Disgaea 3 was that it was a visual embarrassment.

    • DISLIKE!

Visual embarrassment? The attacks looked splendid and the portrait sprite work was great.

      • Draparde

i think he was referring to the choice of using sprites over the High quality ones. i personally wont use them…but hey…choice is always nice

    • Code

rar, what a terrible thing to say, lots of people can’t wait for Disgaea 4! Your mean, mean-guy!

      • I meant the option to turn the old visuals on. I love retro visuals but the design team has to effectively show intent, which was not necessarily the case for Disgaea 3. They just looked lazily ported over from the second game.

    • pridesin

Disgaea series were never about having good graphic. I think the best part of this series are about fun stories and cute characters. Something I can enjoy playing without having stress.

    • Slashlen

I don’t think many will use it, but I like that they have the option. It just seems like the kind of thing they would do.

“We realize many of the people who play our games don’t like fancy HD graphics, so here’s an option to turn them off!”

  • Guest

why would anyone want the crap graphics

    • Jellybit

Well, the new art isn’t just a high res tracing of the old art. It’s actually a bit of a reimagining in some cases (not exactly drastic, but it’s there). For instance, the old plant girl is a lot curvier, instead of the new almost-loli version, plus her eyes are designed to be more seductive than the new wide innocent eyes, and she has an open mouth. Overall, I think she was supposed to be more of a seductive creature before like the monster she’s based on. I like the new art a lot, but I could see someone liking the old designs/colors more. Most of it seems pretty identical in design though.

      • Code

Actually the “plant girl” is a trap, it’s always been male. The new stuff is would for the most part be produced from the original animation stills/artwork done by Takehito Harada without going through the process of downsizing it for the lower resolutions sprites, they wouldn’t be producing the HD sprites, from tracing the old sprites. The old sprites were downsized from actual hand drawn stills, in the Disgaea art books you can see a lot of the originals in full, so it’s less about using the old sprites and working backwards up to HD, and more about using the original stills but not downsizing them. Also a lot of the changes your referring to could stem from the fact that when the stills are sized down, they also have to be cleaned up to make the sprite as clear as possible. Sometimes this includes taking liberties like the shape of the body and particularly with fine details such as eyes. Things that the original artwork might not feature but would make the sprite appear more crisp and visually easier to read.

I don’t know if you’ve ever drawn something blown up from a projector, or even digitally, but it’s actually kind of awkward to do, because all the lines become blurry and thick. It’s easier to size things down from being large then to size things up from something small. With HD, they’d simply be working closer to a 1 to 1 ratio to the original stills then they would be needing to size something up.

          • Code

Yes >w<; Trap until proven untrap, it's the only science we got!

        • Jellybit

That doesn’t negate or differ from what I said aside from my saying the new stuff was more of a reimagining than an upres, but thanks for the info. I was just saying that some people may prefer the low res designs over the high res designs, since they differ in some ways. Regardless of whether or not that was to improve communication or convey a different mood. My point was simply that they are not identical in what they convey, and some people may have a preference in either direction.

  • glemtvapen

I hope they put back some of the old monster classes. I want my Great Wyrm back.

    • Code

Yeah I agree with this, I noticed a lot of the monsters so far have been from Disgaea 2 — I’m hoping Disgaea 1 and Disgaea 3 monsters make it back into the mix, as well as some fresh ones for Disgaea 4 >w<

  • Day2Day

    **Single Manly Tear**
    It’s so beautiful…

  • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

The sprites do look great, but now the perspective changes really stick out to me.

Curse those sprites for looking so good that my visual standards for this game has increased tenfold!

  • Arcm

Oh boy next year can’t come any sooner

  • LastFootnote

    It…it’s so beautiful…

I didn’t really have a problem with Disgaea 3’s graphics, but I have to say that I love the new hi-res sprites for 4. I was worried that Disgaea 4 would “improve” its graphics by having ugly polygonal characters. Glad my fears were ill-founded.

  • I W a n t L a h a r l I n D i s g a e a 4(and not a fucking DLC)!!!!!!
also flonne(disgaea 2 custome) I prefer her than etna!!!

    • I think it is impossible for Laharl to be DLC. According to my records he wasnt DLC before and I cant imagine making him DLC. I would so miss his laugh!

  • Pichi

Love the choice between graphics! New ones are so much better and defined. And when I want the old, switch!

  • HD Eringa shrooms!

  • About goddamn time you upgraded, Nippon Ichi…also here’s the question…is the game in 720p or 1080p?

    • The back of the box to D3 says 720p and 1080p…so Im guess they are keeping the resolution settings…

  • ZomaNeko

I love it!! I LOVE 2D colorful and pretty graphics, and it’s soo amazing to see it when it’s in such high definition like this! The Archer class also looks so nice~ :D
