At Long Last…The First Time Travelers Screenshots [Update: And Video]

By Ishaan . October 19, 2010 . 6:39am

At their Vision 2010 event in Tokyo, Level 5 revealed Time Travelers, a mystery game for the Nintendo 3DS penned by Jiro Ishii, who directed 428: Fusasareta Shibuya de, a highly-acclaimed visual novel for the Nintendo Wii in Japan.

Time Travelers doesn’t have a genre attached to it yet, but Ishii promised at Level 5’s event that the game would not disappoint those who were looking forward to its story. Notice the zombie-looking guy sitting behind the protagonist in the third screen? He’s an important character, too.

  • The game looks hot, Im interested lol.

  • kyuketsukimiyu

I’ve been excited for this game since the concept art was first released. This has only made me more excited.

    • I hope it gets localized

      • kylehyde

Me too. Thank God that Level 5 is going to have more presence in the westenr now that they have offices in America.

  • Not native 3DS resolution. Hoping these aren’t “simulated” shots with added FSAA.

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Definitely too clean. Looks like the shots were outputted at high res and then downsampled. Even the MGS 3DS shots don’t look like this.

      • NeoTechni

        worse, the mgs shots dont even resemble the video ;_;
the video looks the same as peace walker on psp, graphically

        • jj984jj

What are you talking about? The screens are clearly from the E3 demo.

          • NeoTechni

With all due respect, you are clearly blind. video that came out after the screens were released is clearly lower quality than the screenshots. Not only is it a lot lower in quality, but look at his clothes! They are completely different!

          • There are true fidelity screenshots with clear aliasing.

“the video looks the same as peace walker on psp, graphically” and you’re calling someone else blind?

            MGS:Snake Eater 3DS

            MGS Peace Walker

          • jj984jj

That’s clearly during the scene with boss since you could move the camera around in the demo. And no it’s not a different outfit at all.

          • NeoTechni

“And no it’s not a different outfit at all. ”

ARE YOU BLIND? They are completely different colors! Note on the screenshot on the left, the fine-lined bar going down his shoulders to his chest? Its completely gone on the screenshot of the video!
            It’s a COMPLETELY different outfit!

“and you’re calling someone else blind? ”

You didn’t even click the link I gave!
            This one:
The shot on the left is a shot of the recently released video (it’s labeled by the way) the shot on the right is one of those screens you linked to.

Not how the video of MGS3D looks nothing like the shots we were given, and more like Peace Walker.

Again, it helps if you actually click the link. You’re using old evidence, and my point is the old evidence was wrong. Ignoring the new evidence doesn’t prove anything. So yes, I’m calling you blind.

          • jj984jj

You’re calling it completely different because of the color difference between the video and the screen? Are you serious? The screen was taken from the scene with boss, how can you not see it? All they did was move the camera down while it was on Snake.

          • NeoTechni

Screenshot on the right, not the left. Note the details of the plugs on his necklace, fine lines of the headband, fine detail of his facial hair, all of which completely gone on the left shot of the recently released video. Even the background has been horribly downgraded. You would have to be blind not to see the difference.

          • actually, the ss you posted, notice the aliasing on the shoulder and on the ear. and you’re honestly comparing that with a youtube video?

          • NeoTechni

Yes, I notice the aliasing is completely irrelevant and proves nothing. They could have rendered it on a PS3 and still had aliasing. Your point?

I also know youtube compression doesnt explain the complete change in clothing, or even any of the other details I pointed out.

          • Why would Kojima Productions waste their time doctoring screenshots while leaving obvious aliasing? If they wanted bullshots, they would have supersampled the images which they clearly have not.

Change of clothing? You’re watching a compressed youtube video—and a really bad one at that! I just viewed it again to see if I’m not losing my mind, and, lo and behold, the details you claim are missing are there. I’m not saying it looks exactly as in the screenshot, but it is easily superior to the PSP. I mean, look at the hideous n64-esque texture over Snake’s right shoulder in PSP shot, not to mention the complete absence of normal maps.

          • NeoTechni

“Why would Kojima Productions waste their time doctoring screenshots while leaving obvious aliasing? If they wanted bullshots”

I’m not claiming they are bullshots. I’m claiming there is a huge difference in visual quality in what the game was when it was a tech demo running no AI/physics/game engine/etc PROBABLY on hardware to-spec with what they thought the 3DS will be, and the video they showed actually running on a 3DS. Which is pretty much the same thing that happened with Killzone on PS3. People were told to expect PS3/360 graphics, and what we’re being shown actually running in real time is equal to PSP

“Change of clothing? You’re watching a compressed youtube video—and a really bad one at that! ”

That still doesnt explain the entirely different uniform. Look at the picture, compression doesnt REMOVE entire objects. Nor does it change dark grey and black to green.

Look on the right screenshot, the bars to the left and right of his head that go down his chest. They are completely gone in the video, replaced with the same color used for the lines on the rest of the uniform.

There is a HUGE difference in quality between the 2, and youtube compression doesnt explain it.

“but it is easily superior to the PSP”

Not in the slightest. I’ve played over 20 hours of the PSP game. They’re clearly par. Which is sad since PSP came out 6 years ago, and 3DS is coming out on it’s 7th year.

“I mean, look at the hideous n64-esque texture over Snake’s right shoulder in PSP shot”

You mean the same area of the video I’ve been telling you to look at?

“not to mention the complete absence of normal maps. ”

Also, completely missing from the new trailer. Other things missing include facial animation altogether, which were in the original screenshots.

          • NeoTechni

I’m calling it completely different cause it’s completely different, are you really that blind? In the screenshot its yellow and made up of fine lines, in the video its a solid GREEN bar. Did you even look at the comparison shot?

Youtube compression does NOT change dark grey to yellow/green.

“The screen was taken from the scene with boss, how can you not see it?”

WTF are you talking about? Yes the screen on the right is from the scene with the boss. I never disputed that. The screen on the left is from the recently released video of the game on a 3DS. And there are huge graphical downgrades between the 2.

You’re completely ignoring the differences or completely BLIND. The differences are just that huge. Youtube compression doesnt turn those 3 dimensional bolts on the right into a flat 2d texture, doesnt change colors of everything or remove entire objects. You’re making excuses.

          • jj984jj

The fight is in the trailer yet you’re capping the shitty compressed trailer at a different part when the lighting is clearly different during the scene. You’re trying too hard to disprove what has already been proven tbh.

          • NeoTechni

“You’re trying too hard to disprove what has already been proven tbh. ”

Dont be ignorant. You’re fighting too hard to defend something so blatantly downgraded. Dont insult others for being stubborn when you’re doing the same thing.

          • jj984jj, ignore NeoTechni. he can’t even notice the normal mapping in the demo.

          • NeoTechni

Thats cause it’s gone in the newer video.

          • Whatever you say, Homer.

  • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Looks like… The Girl Who Leapt Through Time: The Game? Nah, but it looks amazing anyway.

EDIT: Actually now that I look at it again, the colors and lighting, plus the setting all look like The Place Promised in Our Early Days or 5cm per Second. Definitely a plus.

  • Soma

    Woah! Time travel AND zombies?
This game is just getting better and better. =D

  • I laughed at the ad results xD “Rugrats: Time Travelers” lol
The game looks really good, I wonder how it will work.

  • Guest

Looks like they reskinned Ushiro PSP game

    • Shadow_Raskolnik

That’s what I thought when I saw some of these screens.

    • MrRobbyM

My thoughts exactly. Looks like they canceled that to make this. Which is a shame, I liked Ushiro style a bit more.

  • joesz

school girls will never get old… remind me of that girl from love plus
But maybe this game will be interesting.

And that guy is killer from shadow hearts 3:P

  • MemeticRichard

Level 5 has really been upping the ante lately.

That’s good to hear. Their latest excursions have been…underwhelming, to say the least.

  • Aoshi00

Clever use of the two screens, wonder if this is a Butterfly Effect kind of game like Time Hollow… I like the art style.

  • All japan games r awesome

  • vadde939

Damn all these Level 5 announcements may just convince me to Day 1 the 3DS regardless of price. Hope the thing is not region locked.
