Golden Sun: Dark Dawn Trailer And Screenshots Rise And Shine

By Ishaan . October 20, 2010 . 6:01pm

Golden Sun: Dark Dawn takes place 30 years after the first two games in the series on the Gameboy Advance, and something Camelot did was make sure ties were maintained to the originals. Dark Dawn’s protagonist, for example, is Matthew, the son of Isaac from the original Golden Sun.

Curious to see what the original protagonist of Golden Sun looks like, 30 years later, as compared to his younger self?

Matthew’s friends are relatives of older Golden Sun characters, too. Tyrell is the son of Garet, while Karis is the daughter of Ivan. Other party members in Dark Dawn, too, have ties to previous characters.

  • ZOHMAHGAWD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ZOHMAHGAWD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ZOHMAHGAWD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This game is gonna be so awesome!!!!!!!!! My mind will be so blown when I finally have it in my hands. This. this. this is the RPG to rival all rpgs on the Nintendo DS. I am so glad to own one and am so glad to have experienced the golden sun series and will be so glad to fully and utterly enjoy this game; from the very depths of my soul, excitement will pour out this November!!!! Best RPG, no best handheld game of the year!!!!!!

This is truly one of the best image galleries, trailers, and just articles Ive ever seen!!! Glorious indeed! lol!

    • Exkaiser

Strange Journey is on the DS already. Dark Dawn will be a good game, certainly, but it won’t be as good as Strange Journey.

      • I’m an SMT fan, so even if this is a really good game, it still won’t top any SMT game I’ve played.

      • I somehow missed strange journey.

I remember being in a store trying to decide between Strange Journey and Devil Survivor. My friends wouldnt let me buy a game so I never returned or had a chance to go back and decide between the two. I should really pick one up.

      • SolidusSnake

Damn straight! I finally beat it for the first time a couple weeks ago, on the neutral path. Man, that end boss was a ball buster! I’m a big fan of Etrian Odyssey, and Strange Journey had everything I liked about those games (great dungeon design, fun exploration, good challenge) as well as everything I like about SMT in general – great story, crazy insane demons to fight and talk to, hours of demon fusing fun, absolutely nutty difficulty. Seriously I don’t know how Atlus (RIP) does it.

        • Exkaiser

Ah, don’t act like Atlus is dead, they just don’t exist as a standalone entity anymore.

      • kylehyde

You can’t be sure about until you tried both games. In my case the main comptetion that this game is going to have for the title of best rpg and best handheld of the year is Dragon Quest IX.

Anyway all is relative, nothing is absolute.

        • Exkaiser

I’m not dissing Dark Dawn, I’m just saying that it’s certainly not something to get that excited about.

          I’m sure it’ll be good.

      • onilink888

So, basically: game that I’ve played > game that I haven’t touched that isn’t even so much as released yet?

Explain the logic, good sir. Oh, and what say you use unbiased judgement this time around, hmm?

        • You’re attempt at disagreeing and questioning logic in a gentlemanly manner has failed. Can you see where you went wrong?

        • Exkaiser

The Golden Sun games are good. Great, even. They’re well-made and manage to stand out despite playing the JRPG tropes quite straight. However, they’re not excellent. Strange Journey was excellent.

Camelot makes great games, but I don’t think Dark Dawn is going to hit a lot higher of a pitch than the first two Golden Suns.

But you’re right, it is my opinion. You see, “good” is a subjective quality.

          • Youre extinguishing your own excitement for Golden Sun Dark Dawn before the game is out!!!! lol. What are you using, or rather, what from the game and what is known thus far, makes you say and do that?

          • Exkaiser

Given the series history of good games that aren’t exceptional (besides taking full advantage of the GBA, as well as being an original RPG series on the system), and given the trailers and information available, the third game in the series does not look exceptionally better than the first two.

Except for Isaac with a manly beard. That part is amazing.

I’m also using my wallet and my stomach to quench my excitement. I’m already buying ZHP, and Dark Dawn is more expensive. I’d rather not starve!

        • I said any SMT game I’ve played, not any game. I’m not saying this game won’t be good, but I know, from my personal taste, that I won’t like it more than any SMT game I’ve played. That’s just the way it is.

    • It’s taken a long time…

    • Thought you didn’t play any games released before 2004? :P

      • I had a gba like every other kid back then lol; didnt really play my own consoles games until 2006 though

    • kylehyde

Calm down you horses a little.

I know that you are really excited for this moment, I waited for this sequel 7 years (In fact GS and GSTLA are my favorites of all the time), but still is good to see much love to GS.

But I have to admit that this year many awesome titles were released for DS and in the RPG department.

Still I’m confident about camelot works an I’m pretty sure that this game will become one of the greates games in the whole DS library and the whole handheld story. Currently The world Ends With you is my favorite DS game and I can’t wait to see if this game can dethrone the king.

Anyway three HURRAY for GOLDE SUN DARK DAWN.

      • I guess the Golden Sun series just holds a special place in my heart, the first RPG, that I completed multiple times on my own. The story was memorable as well. Unfortunately, I have to say that apart from getting Pokemon this year, that I have missed/not seen a majority of games on the DS this year.

  • didnt the second golden sun end with a cliffhanger similar to the 1st? was the story put on hold for thier children?

    • Not really because they finished their mission in the first one. The only cliffhanger was if Alex survived or not… (was granted the power)

  • Day2Day

It kind of reminds me of DQIX…
    Graphicwise, I mean…

  • holyPaladin

    Awesome :D

    Son of Isaac huh
    And Daughter of Ivan?

  • Avojavo

Isaac has a beard! Now he looks like… all those conveniently stationed Adepts that let you resurrect and stuff. Or like what Ganondorf would have looked like if he had kind eyes and blonde hair.

I’m interested in whether they changed the ‘attack overflow’ system. Previously if 3 people attacked one monster and the 2nd person killed it, the 3rd person would go into defensive position. Made my ability to do arithmetic improve tremendously, but I’m hoping for a 3rd person attacks the next monster approach.

    • I have good news for you. They did.

  • joesz

    smexy Isaac I say.

  • Yesshua

I hope this game is more like Golden Sun 2 than Golden Sun. I thought the story and characterization was much better the second time around. I’m actually somewhat disappointed that the party is made up of the progeny of the first game’s party rather than the relatively more interesting Sheba, Jenna, and Felix.

That’s just my take though, each to his or her own.

    • Wasnt Jenna and Isaac an item? I thought Sheba was infatuated with Ivan.

      • JennaxIsaac and FelixxSheba was what I saw. IIRC, weren’t Ivan and Sheba siblings?

        • Ivan’s past was given but Sheba’s remains a mystery. All that was given is that she fell out of sky as a baby at the rate of a shooting star and didn’t suffer a single scratch. It’d be nice if there was some way to explain about her in this game but, I don’t think there’s a way to do that without turning it into a “What the…” moment.

    • Exkaiser

Personally, I liked the first game’s party a lot more, but I don’t really think either game had strong characterization.

  • CAN’T WAIT xD already on pre-order on my local VG shop, this will be mine ASAP :P been waiting since Golden Sun The Lost Age for this! Actually, I’m replaying both games this month! Pok√©mon Black will need to hibernate :P
btw, this guy|25 looks a lot like… could it be? it’s been 30 years… this will be interesting! :D

  • Older Isaac design = Awesome

    • Hraesvelgr

Beard > no beard. Universal law.

      • Ereek

I’ve never understood this fascination with beards. In my opinion, it doesn’t make you manly. To me it just makes you look ungroomed.

        • Do you see that beard on Isaac’s face? The man keeps himself groomed.

        • Hraesvelgr

          I… I have a beard… :(

      • M’iau M’iaut

Right now the Phillies certainly know one must FEAR THE BEARD!

  • Was that Kraden at 0:46? How frickin old is this guy @[email protected]

    • Hm he must have been able to use Babis draught from the Lemurians, lol. Hes in one of these images isnt he.

    • Exkaiser

Yeah, he’s all shrunken and is 80% beard now, but he’s still kicking.

Maybe he’s been sucking up some of the mojo from Isaac’s Mars Star?

  • fuzzy_hobo

They haven’t revealed anything about Mia, Jenna, or Sheba yet, right? It’s ridiculous if they didn’t hook up with any of the guys from previous games…

  • I want to see Felix son…. I hope they make one, because I like Felix more then Isaac..

  • I… Isaac has a beard! D:

Other than that, this made my day.

    • Exkaiser

I think you mean, “that made my day.”

      It’s very manly!

  • Jaxx-Leviathan

Hahaha, Garet has a moustache. At least that’s what I think it is, if that even is Garet on the second picture down on the right. And I love Isaac’s new design, hella cool fella. Now all I need is for Alex to show up, pwetty please! He must have survived. Or at least, in the spirit of the theme, he has a prodigy as well.
EDIT: By the way, I love how their hair colour represents their affinity with the elements. Though I’ve always prefered Wind to be gray, but for some reason green is popular in RPG’s to represent it.

    • Exkaiser

Yeah, he’s got a moustache now.

Karis is Ivan’s daughter, so where’d she get the green hair? Hmn.

  • ZomaNeko

I am honestly not a fan of primitive 3D Graphics, but of all the 3D RPGs I’ve played and seen on DS, this easily looks the by far best and matches the artstyle so well! I am really excited for this game, I know I’ll love it~
